I think the problem is now everyone wants his innocent pulpy guilty pleasure to be deep, intellectual and post-modernist, and also everything tend to be politicized to please either the new left or the new right. And science fiction was historically a nerdy brainy genre, if not mindless lazy escapism. The '80s to '90s era of mindless action sci-fi is over, and now we are back to the pretentious stuff. But you also can't make it too complicated and slow because zoomers has low attention span.

Yeah, that's what defined the timeless classics of Old Sci-Fi titans like Heinlein, Dick, Lem, Le Guin, Sheckley, Ellison or Asimov: their stuff was mindless, lazy, escapist and apolitical.
