is contemporary literature just shit or are the great ones just hidden?

The whole thing is actually subjective and the point of literature is to enrich your life or stimulate your mind somehow. Fiction isn't inherently useful. You just have to find a book your speed and enjoy it for what it is.

It really depends on what makes it shit or great in your mind. The age of literature having any cultural importance seems to be long over and we definitely live in an anti-culture, so if those matter for great literature then it’s all shit. But if you’re looking for technically good prose or something then sure maybe it’s just hidden.

fiction is inherently useful. it imparts entertainment, information, enlightenment. it serves as example, whether positive or negative, always

There’s good stuff but you have to stop paying attention to /lit/ and carve out your own taste, which is a task which seems impossible to 90% of this board.

It's alive and thriving, just don't expect to find it in books. The great writers of our generation are 4chan shitposters.
