How to be a better person? How do you develop meaning in your life to the degree that you always have compassion and levity to grant to other humans?

Surely there are books about this. I know that it must be "meaning" itself that I have warped and royally fucked up. I know that in regular human interaction, most humans have a narrative they believe in that allows them to extend themselves to others. This seems so impossible.
