Something just kinda hit me...Is he the last "writer"? I don't mean to sound too hyperbolic or anything it's just that, after Wallace killed himself, I don't know of or don't see any of the new generation taking on literary fiction with any type of commitment. And, with the exception of Cormac McCarthy's recent passing, the media has all but forgotten it ever existed...

Who's next?

I guess it's maybe just Houellebecq? I don't know, I've never read his stuff.

Who am I missing that I should know about and be prepared for once Pynchon dies?

DeLillo, Barth, Coover. I'm not so knowledgeable of the current writers but Joshua Cohen is a talented prose stylist and there's a good chance he produces something truly great.

Book Of Numbers is bold and experimental but the story never quite lands as it should, whereas Moving Kings tells an exceptionally well balanced, intelligent, stylish story, albeit rather narrow and safe. If he can work out how to combine the best traits of both, he’ll write something truly important.
