Finished Waybound.

Enjoyed it, definitely have some quibbles but on the whole Cradle was an enjoyable battle shonen masquerading as xianxia. Fights peaked at Wintersteel and no Eithan for most of the last two books was probably a mistake.

Overall I give the series 8.5/10.

I hope Wight just decides to keep writing battle shonen in the future though cause The Captain was just boring without the character progression elements his other novels had.

I liked The Captain well enough, but honestly I just viewed it as basically "One guy who's lived multiple genres of sci-fi mashes them all together onto one ship". Like there's the guy who's basically from a mecha anime, and then the girl who's functionally from... A sort of Dark Souls but space deal (bit Dead Space-y too), while Omega is from something that feels decidedly more cyberpunk. His character-writing tends to be the draw of his stuff for me anyway and apart from the protagonist being kind of boring, I think The Captain delivered well enough on that front.

I can definitely agree with you there. That and he may be one of the only people I've seen who can do compelling action scenes in a nonvisual medium. Although I found it hard to care about any of the characters in the Captain, maybe if I stick around for another book or two that will change. The mecha guy and Omega sold me pretty quickly, though Varic and the space marine lady (I forget most of their names they didn't quite stick as well as Cradle's characters yet) have yet to really impress me. I'm currently reading another book so I've yet to read Waybound, but yeah I've read all the rest. Good series. Charming. Characters are solidly-written, good action sequences. i'm so very torn on Bakker's Second Apocalypse series. Its a real achievement, no question. They are huge books, reasonably well written (by the 3rd or 4th you stop noticing how many times things come swirling down), and the worldbuilding and magic are literally second to none in the grimdark genre, and top 5 in modern fantasy, no question.
that said, bakker is also a grade A edgelord who has designed his world to have every kind of violence possible for the sole purpose of being narratively shocking, and whatever you may think of the value of that, i think the SHOCKING preponderance of sexual violence is problematic bordering on unacceptable. i can't in good faith recommend the books to much of anyone any more, which is such a shame because i legitimately love the worldbuilding, and as i said, i think the magic and metaphysics of the books is AMAZING.
so i dunno. they're intense and gorgeous in a lot of ways. but if you drop into /sffg/ and find yoruself thinking you might want to read the series, just know what you're getting into. rape. lots of it. against literally EVERYTHING that can be raped. and it's not an artistic choice, it's a deadpan serious statement of the author's beliefs...

He was more plot device than character in the first two books and Jordan hadn't decided on what he wanted to do with Mat yet. Once you get to his chapters there will be some stuff that feels like a small retcon, and that's because it is. Book 4 provides a lot of very important background information and lore.

As to Rand's character...he definitely is not your happy-go-lucky, everyone-loves-him protag. But IMO you have to keep in mind what he starts out as, and what is thrust upon him, especially in the later books. As for his "chosen one" powers, I actually love the concept of ta'veren, because it canonizes the "chosen one" powers inside of the lore...at least to an extent.

Terry Goodkind's books are a front seat in the show of a writer's slow descent into insanity. It starts reasonably good, gets weird, then increasingly batshit crazy and 'le smart.' Overall, not worth reading because waiting for the pay off is too long and you will lose your braincells in the process.

Just finished reading this whole thing and it was pretty good at the beginning but the longer it went on the less anything mattered. Sure, interesting things happened and I liked the setting, the MC's personality, mythos, the style it was written from first person view, etc but near the end it almost feels like a parody of itself and things happen too fast with too many twists without buildup or impact, or anything really, almost like the author just wanted to get it over with. For example one of the main side characters dies and there's no impact at all, not for the MC or the reader.
The side characters, especially the antagonists, are pitifully explored. What little romance there is is abrupt, rushed and feels like an obligation, rather than something the writer was passionate to include. Vampire factions in Europe are mostly mentioned in passing and vaguely explained so it's hard to feel like they pose any sort of threat later on. Etc etc.
Anyway, I read the whole thing so I would still recommend it just for the MC's ridiculous antics, even if it mostly turns into a comedy by the end. It was a fun read

We'll see when we see, I suppose. And he's also got a Wrynn/Rin-protagonist thing in the works, I believe. Not a character I've cared TOO much about, but could be interesting. I think he's a competent writer overall, he just always seems to bog his own work down. SAM is a decent series when it's either about Corin and company doing tower stuff or Corin doing cool inventions, and the character drama is just not super interesting because I just don't CARE about Jin or that weird dead ghost girl that Sera fell for. Weapons and Wielders is just a more straightforward adventure where interesting stuff is always happening. And Keras is just more entertaining than Corin, because Keras feels more consistent and cohesive as a character, whereas Corin just occasionally dips into "default character writing".
