The fourth slot is up for grabs. My wife is a Thomist but I'm not so convinced — I much prefer Anselm. Yet I don't think either approaches even the diminishing returns of Kierkegaard, the greatest philosopher of the post-Enlightenment era.

I think you think that only because he came last. That's really besides the point, none would have thought they would be lumped together. Just running through all the author's I've read, I still think this is a good painting to represent the most potent imaginative authors/poets if one had to choose four. The only one I'd question is Dante for weird narrative reasons but his vision is so vivid that I can't disagree with his inclusion.

Cervantes is a novelist not a poet. He isn’t germane to anything.

>> No.22098681

>>22098049
novelist, poet, etc means nothing. Cervantes doesn't deserve to be there because he is not on the same level of the others. He is a robust satirist, an acute psychologist, but he is not an artist. By art i mean:

>These then with high hearts abode the whole night through along the dykes of war, and their fires burned in multitudes. [555] Even as in heaven about the gleaming moon the stars shine clear, when the air is windless, and forth to view appear all mountain peaks and high headlands and glades, and from heaven breaketh open the infinite air,1 and all stars are seen, and the shepherd joyeth in his heart; [560] even in such multitudes between the ships and the streams of Xanthus shone the fires that the Trojans kindled before the face of Ilios. A thousand fires were burning in the plain and by each sat fifty men in the glow of the blazing fire. And their horses, eating of white barley and spelt, [565] stood beside the cars and waited for fair-throned Dawn.

This is art. Not Sancho Panza's gags.
