Anons, I am in a situation where reading is near impossible due to the overwhelming amount of talking and noise going on.

What are some good earplugs that block noise?

Have you tired listening to to white noise on headphones? I've never tried earplugs for reading but I've always found that I still heard what's going on around me with them on. I listen to ocean noise when I read on my lunch break

Earplugs won't help enough; there's also still the sound of you breathing + bloodpulse that gets echoed back.

You need to get those industrial sound-blocking ear defenders used on construction sites. You can also get noise-cancelling headphones, which help a lot. They aren't really enough by themselves for proper focus in true noise, but I find that reading with noise-cancelling + white noise is sufficient.

the best site for this is
https://www.earplugstore.com
try a diversity pack to see what you like

the SNR is the number to look at, higher means better. I use 3m earplugs with snr of 36

if the plug is too long, you can cut it with a clean scissor.

Just go to the pharmacy and grab a pack of whatever's cheapest or claims the most dB of sound blockage. You likely don't need total silence, and it's not the noise, it's the talking that's distracting.

These have always worked well enough for me. I can even nap during the day with them despite living next to a construction site.

>go to the library to read
>it should be quiet and put me in the right surroundings to read
>some idiot is talking to the librarian

Very frustrating. It's almost impossible for me to read if someone is talking.

I use bluetooth buds with ANC and listen to slow bar jazz while reading in public. Very relaxing.

These are the best. Blocks out just about everything and what is left is muted so much it barely comes into attention.
Honestly these things are valuable.

I second this. I have used both, mostly because my headphones broke down, and white noise completely filters outside noise in a way that earplugs simply can't. The only downside is that it might deafen you in the long term.

Just whatever standard stuff you can find at the pharmacy. Couple it with either noise-cancelling headphones or regular headphones with white noise. Ensure that the white noise is at a tolerable level by testing the sound levels on something else - otherwise you can do a real number on your hearing, because subjective tolerance of loud white noise is higher than other sounds.
It works splendidly
