What's your favorite era of fantasy and scifi? When did it start declining? How were the 80s in particular? I'm interested in reading CJ cherryh because I like alien species/cultures and mysteries as a plot element but perhaps there are more authors, I don't care if scifi or fantasy.

I’d really recommend this storu to people. Post-Apoc in a frozen world where humanity has destroyed itself. A battle between two AI gods; one of whom controls robots beneath the earth. The other is trying to keep humanity alive on a frozen wasteland on the surface. There’s no systems or any other garbage like that.

Waybound, the final Cradle book, which I'll be writing about, is releasing next week. After having thought it over for a while I've decided to switch the Self-Pub Month for the /sffg/ Goodreads Group from July to June. The main drawback is Of 20 having less time to finish what he's doing before this arbitary event, but he may not be finished within a few months anyway and there's always next year. Unlike last year I'll only be doing 4 this time. Those 4 slots will be Self-Published Novel, Non-Progression Webnovel, Progression Novel, and Progression Webnovel. If it needs to be changed it will be. I already have some ideas for what they could be, though I'm also open to suggestions. The following have been used before and none of them will be used again.

Self-Published (Originally) Already Used
The Sword of Kaigen
Aching God
Beyond Redemption
Orconomics
Senlin Ascends
Odyssey One
We Are Legion
Wool
The Martian
Theft of Swords
Unsouled (Cradle)
The First Step (A Thousand Li)
Into the Labyrinth (Mage Errant)
Sufficiently Advanced Magic (Arcane Ascension)
Mother of Learning
The Wandering Inn
Worm
A Will Eternal (Desolate Era)
Patriarch Reliance (I Shall Seal The Heavens)
Lord of Mysteries

Title: Battle Mage Farmer: Fermentation (Book #4)
Author: Seth Ring

[Review]
I have read all four books now and I'm not impressed. What started like a cozy LitRPG OP Mage farm retirement with better planning than Beware of Chicken has turned into some weird Cultivation/Cradle combo with unedning world-ending threats. It fails to deliver on its premise. After four books I'm honestly tired and unsure whether I want to conitnue reading the incoming fifth book.

The romance is awfuly slow, it took the protagonist over a year in book(!) to have a kiss with the woman that lived with him, and after two years it's softly implied they still haven't sleeped with each other. This is some hilarious stuff. If I haven't seen the author's other long litrpg progression series I'd be 60% sure the books are written by a woman. Maybe it's partially ghost-written or his wife/gf provided a strong influence.

Anyway, if you want a litrpg series with a promise of retirement on a farm...skip over this one. The author allows one book according to the description, then turns the story into some post-apo cultivation. The dialogues are good, especially speeches were a pleasant surprise. But the writing still suffers from excessive showing-not-telling.

Series Rating: 5.75/10

Cherryh's great but be aware that even though her worldbuilding is amazing a very imaginative her stories are always more character driven, think Bujold or Hobb.

Memes set aside, I am thinking about re-reading Stormlight Archive after many years in order to get a fresh, much more clear impression of the series.

While Sanderson is no saint of my devotion due some of his magical practices, as a teenager I loved Way of Kings: the novel felt like an epic in the full meaning of the word, mysterious, captivating, marvelous and even dark in some places. It wasn't until Oathbringer when I felt that the saga was losing its charm, becoming more and a more a rather bland superhero story.

I want to see how much that initial, old impression holds now.

Oh did we finally get a title for Stormlight 5? Neat. I do remember it being mentioned somewhere that the first five will have a palindromic name when shortened, so that's fancy that it worked out (TWOK, WOR, O, ROW, KWOT). I still have... Middling hopes for it, admittedly. ROW was just fine. Really hammered in that Sanderson doesn't know how to make character arcs for a character after they already went through one, so he just repeated them.

Paladin of the Sword by Marvin Knight

[The Story]

Barely escaping into Hell after being pursued by a group of oathbreaking Paladins, Darren and his mother find themselves trapped in the dark. Struggling to survive against First Order Imps and Demons, the two eek out a survivable lifestyle... until returning to the surface. His mother betrayed and killed in the aftermath, Darren is forced back into Hell with no guide but his mother's old skill books and a dagger-turned-sword named Melancholy. For the next 15 years he trained in those infernal pits. Learning and mastering skills to become a demon to literal demons, capable of creating an aura that can kill their weakest without exertion or effort.

Hell hasn't been a challenge to Darren since he was 10 years old, but the surface? Humans? An entirely different story all together. Feeling that he's strong enough to leave Hell and follow his Mother's dying words, Darren breaks out by killing a lesser Duke of Hell and teleporting himself into a forest outside of his destination. Directly on the path of a merchant caravan ran by a gorgeous pink-haired woman named Cassandra and her cousin Callum.

Becoming their defender for the trip to Linedeep, Darren soon becomes infatuated with the pink haired caravanner and vows to protect her. This takes them into direct confrontation with a bandit king and his legion of followers, all blessed by demons... In a world that's been twisted by ambition, there's only one man that truly follows the light. Its up to Darren, Melancholy and his tremendously powerful and purifying cock to save this world. Perhaps even return its people to the Seraph's holy graces...

[The Character(s)]

The only character that exists in this book is Darren, a behemoth of a Stu corded with muscle after a lifetime in a one-man war. A paladin by training, he completely lacks social skills and instead relies on Cassandra, Callum, and a 3rd group member - Morgana. Unfamiliar with the fairer sex and the 'ample globules' they carry on their chest, Darren is at first stunned into silence by the forward advances of these women... until 2 prostitutes show him exactly how to please a woman. These skills come in handy during the first 3rd of the book, requiring a threesome to break a summoning spell for a prince of Hell. Driven into a righteous cock lust, Morgana and Cassandra exist solely to hang off of Darren's arm.

Callum as a character is our yardstick for the common man. Whatever he fails at, Darren succeeds in without effort or trail. The sheer amount of times this man nearly dies in this book and is saved by the strapping paladin is staggering. Believe he's used as the reader's self-insert as he's on a journey of growth and power after meeting Darren.

[Final Thoughts]

Some of the clumsiest writing I've ever read and a plot that goes nowhere. The sex scenes were atrocious and I can't believe I had to listen to a narrated ahegao. Cultivation harems somehow beat litRPG's... Unbelievable.

My new lowest score for a title that I willingly finished. This shit broke my spirit. Darren takes us such presence and yet has no character, barely any speaking lines, and some of the worst development I've ever read. 'I can't read,' he admits in one chapter. Next chapter he finds a hidden slip of paper indicting a local Paladin guild in profiteering and can read it like an old pro? Character motivations change on a whim, the only exception being Callum who's a delicate little pissant for a bulk of the story. Plot developments come out of nowhere and it's all... just... bad.

I've written better smut while I was still in HS and still didn't refer to anyone's cock as a 'turgid member' or 'pulsating rod'.

Everything you listed has a clear story direction and engaging characters with proper storytelling. Paladin of the Sword is a Conan comic except the plot has been watered down in favor of engorged shafts and malleable behinds. Being 'on the nose' doesn't make bad writing and development GOOD just because it's parody.

A Harvest of Ash and Blood - D. J. Molles (2023)

A Harvest of Ash and Blood is a white-knuckle ride that gets your heart pounding and your pulse racing as it rampages through the hell that is the battlefield. D. J. Molles has written around twenty novels prior to this, almost all of which seem to be some flavor of military thriller. Maybe it's because I haven't read much like this, but I'm thoroughly impressed by the book's continuous intense action from start to end except for a few breaks for the characters to rest for a bit. The fantasy elements are well-integrated, though those looking for a typical epic fantasy adventure may find themselves with a rather different narrative. This is almost entirely a series of brutal military engagements that reminded me of a mix between twentieth century and medieval wars.

Depending how caught up the reader is by the action there may be little time to think about what is happening, why it is, or what it means. Although many details are stated directly, the implications are left for the reader to determine and the real-world similarities may not be immediately obvious. The narrative walks a fine line between being morally repugnant and awesome, though depending on your sensibilities it may only be the former. I chose to see it as more the latter, if only because the characters reacted what they had done and had great interactions between them. This is as much about the characters as it is about what they do.

The fantasy elements serve both practical and metaphorical functions. The former is how technology is powered by magic, which is a properly deceptive term on multiple levels. A select few individuals have specific magical abilities. Magic is mostly used by the enemy forces, though the allied forces have a few that can. As for the latter I found that there's surprisingly a lot to consider when making real world connections that go deeper than the surface level statements. There's a lot of social commentary, though it's often presented in ways that could be easy to overlook. For those who want it, it's there, and for those who only want the action, it's not difficult to let it all pass by.

This is listed as a standalone on the author's site and it works as a self-contained story, as long as you can be satisfied with many of the worldbuilding specifics being left unexplained. The opening map depicts a tidally locked planet and it's implied as such in the text, though that may not be evident if you didn't already know what that was. There's more than enough left for it to become a series, though that's probably dependent on how well this one does. If there are more, I'll definitely be reading them. If nothing else, this may get the author a few new readers for his primary series who otherwise wouldn't have known about them or gave them a try. I'll certainly try reading what else he's written.

Rating: 4.5/5

I received this DRC from Blackstone Publishing through NetGalley.

Black Company is written in an usual way, as the main literary conceit of the story is that it is a chronicle written by a member of the company. So some entries are laconic, while others are more rich in detail, and there's a lot of jumping around to different times and places. I'd say that the first few books of it are pretty compelling, but I kind of lost interest with the Books of the South.

Personally, I feel like Cook's far better fantasy mercenary story is Instrumentalities of the Night, which is tragically unfinished but I found it nonetheless thoroughly enjoyable as a medieval history buff.

A lot of it is big dick wizards killing each other while the Company just tries to get as far away as possible so they can survive. A major battle can be a single paragraph followed by two pages of the cast sitting around playing cards while bullshitting and wondering which part of the front they're going to be sent to next.

You can take choose Dungeon Diving if you want a decent harem with litrpg elements and decent story, but I personally recommend Fostering Faust. It's just more interesting book, even if overall the trillogy falls off. Otherwise consider System Overclocked, by the same author as Fostering Faust. But if you want light, somewhat pulpy harem take Dungeon Diving, it's at the very least not bad (I admit to skimming some battles, but I do that in a lot of books these days).

how did you find RI? If you liked it then there is really nothing else that will come close to it.
Read Martial World, Divine Throne of Primordial, The Human Emperor.

Yeah, I tried reading I Shall Seal The Heavens, but it wasn't to my taste. Too much of a clusterfuck. Illogical, retarded characters, actions and plot. I didn't even reach chapter 100.

I'll look into your recommendations. I gotta say prince and emperor series weren't all that bad when it comes to progressive shit although it does make you wonder if 90% of the male characters having gay sex at some point was really necessary, funnily the cuckhold is one of the few who go booty unbothered. Thinking about this made me remember the events of a certain character and his "friends" who gayly participated in sausage train nights. Progressive politics in RI?!

ISSTH starts getting good after the first book but it's a lot more comedic than the author's two previous books Renegade Immortal and Pursuit of the Truth which I would recommend over ISSTH, though those take a while to get going as well. His newest work Outside of Time is pretty decent, at least better than his couple previous ones, from what I've read.
Chinese web novels I would recommend (in no particular order) and I've shifted through a lot of shit:
Tales of Herding Gods
Way of Choices
Nightfall
Path Toward Heaven
Sword Dynasty
Tales of Herding Gods
Kingdom's Bloodline
Super Dimensional Wizard
Death Sutra

From that point on they are physically forced to have gay sex at night or they die, but the Gu didn't actually work on their new friend. what's the name of that book where a modern day group of US marines or something get teleported back in time to the roman empire era? or am i making it up

i'll mention other comparable books i've read, both I found very entertaining and amusing, but also surprisingly well written considering what they are about. if anyone knows other similar works please let me know

Ranks of Bronze
a roman legion gets sold as slaves/mercenaries to aliens, they are forced to fight other iron-age civilizations across the universe while trying to gain their freedom

The High Crusade
a minor noble was getting his men ready to march men to jerusalem but aliens land on his territory, so he boards the ship, kills everyone and tries to conquer the alien empire instead. the whole thing is very amusing, and jokes aside it has some very well developed characters and subplots going on as the eternal battle of christians vs sarracens goes on

Just Finished The Wandering Inn volume 7.
I'm continually amazed at how the series hasn't turned to shit yet. Sure, it's a bit predictable at times, and there are barely no stakes To the point where I'm pretty sure the only meaningful character death in the last 4 volumes (Maviola) won't be permanent, but Its fun. And it seems like there are wider plot things kicking into gear with Gods and the Blight King's Sacrifice which have me hooked for better or worse.

I started reading Reverend Insanity because of these spammers, currently 2/3 of the way into it. It is actually much better than i thought it would be.
Ranks 1 to 5 of the "mortal realm" were the most enjoyable to read, the MC has to work and struggle. After Rank 6 things seem to snowball and just get handed to him.
Treasure yellow heaven was a cool concept, like a WoW auction house that services the whole world.
It's too bad the MC has no sex drive, he basically has a harem but doesn't take advantage of it.

Chronicles of an Age of Darkness by Hugh Cook, ten volume epic that was malazan 12 years before GoTM was published,
>The Chronicles of an Age of Darkness began with an ambitious outline for a series of twenty novels. This would have been followed by two equally long series, The Chronicles of an Age of Wrath, and The Chronicles of an Age of Heroes. This sixty-volume scheme ended with the publication of the tenth volume because of disappointing sales.[4]
The last book has an ending, no cliffhangers like fat Martin.
Hawklan by Roger Taylor (1988 - 1999) starts as a fantasy trilogy by the numbers with an amnesiac protagonist but evolves into an 12 books epic where each book has a new mc.
Three Worlds Cycle by Ian Irvine (1998-2017) 13 books

Volume 7 was the end of the golden era of TWI. Volume 8 is brutal in comparison, the stakes gets exponentially bigger and it just keeps going and going and going...Not that's it's BAD bad, it's still miles ahead of most of the fantasy you will ever read, but volume 8 in general was a mistake at work. In my opinion, at least. Some chapters are among the best in the story, though, pure diamonds.
Alas, the story suffers gretly from what you've noticed, don't expect characters to die, basically never. But if you adjust your expectations for that TWI is fucking great.

Thankfuly, Volume 9 is back to the form, for better or worse.

Volume 8 can be described as 'Pirate gets too cocky and wants to juggle several plotlines at the time, rolls 1 and achieves near-total failure.' I guess it won't be as drastic if you binge-read it all, but as someone who read it chapter by chapter...it was brutal. Especially at the end. It was supposed to be finished before the end of 2021, instead it ended in JUNE 2022. It was that much of a shitshow.

>why don't you like it
I suppose the simplest way to put it would be to say that since he joined the University nothing interesting has happened plot wise. It's all very mundane day to day activities mixed with a romance plot that just doesn't hold my interest andflirting/courting that verges on cringeworthy too often. I do like the way Rothfuss writes though (which is the only reason I've continued this far) and generally I don't read first person POV novels. It's actually funny you mention GRRM because I'm coming fresh off a reread of the main ASOIAF series, so maybe my expectations are skewed because of that.
>what do you usually read
Big scale multi POV series are usually what I tend to gravitate to (ASOIAF, The Expanse, Revelation Space etc.) especially if they're rich with well thought out world building I can get immersed in.

From what I've seen, the rewrite left a lot of the story as it is, but the writing changed a bit and resembles Pirate's current style in many cases. Which I dislike in some ways. Recommend me something similar to the show Farscape? Not interested in harem or any anime-esque novels. Would like something with action and also character driven. The only scifi i have read is the first three Dune novels. What o really like about farscape;

>many different planets
>morally ambiguous characters

This has just been added to Netgalley. I could request it and probably get it, but I thought Senlin Ascends was only decent so I doubt that I will.

On a similar note of previously self-published books, Travis Baldree's next book is on there, Bookshops & Bonedust. He's being published by TOR books now. It really seems that many successful indie authors become traditionally published if they can be. Though maybe that's a skewed view.

The Dragon's Banker
Dungeon Crawler Carl
Worth The Candle
[Non-progression webnovel]
If I don't find a suitable non-progression webnovel, I'll probably either put another self-published novel or one of the erotic romance novels that have been written about here or whatever they are.

The four criteria considered were:

Consider 'This Used To Be About Dungeons' by the same author as Worth The Candle. From what I've heard it's a cozy story about a young guy coming to a city away from the capital to start a dungeon delving team, except it's in a semi-advanced world made of hexes(?) or something like that. Mostly character drama, as far as I know. As in title, little actual dungeoning.
Haven't read more than a few dozen chapters, though. But heard only good opinions.

Btw, read the online version. The version on amazon has some changes due to copyright problems. Can be found on AO3 or RR.

I read book one, and I'll give it this, it does a lot more overtly 'video game mechanic' stuff than a lot of other LitRPGs. Not sure if that's necessarily good or not, but hey. It also just... Sort of blatantly wholesale lifted its version of goblins from Final Fantasy XIV. Like they talk the same, have the same naming scheme, look largely the same (not a huge dig, goblins tend to look the same of course) have the same culture of wearing these sort of gas-mask-looking things, etc. It's just a little weird how overt it is.

That's what I'll go with then unless there are other suggestions then I'll consider it, because I'd prefer not to have two by the same author, but if that's how it is, that's how it is.

I'm still open to suggestions from anyone for replacing any of the four mentioned. I realize that Xianxia is missing this year, but I'm not quite sure which I'd put there and it'd probably have to replace Worth The Candle. The likely candidates for that would be Ave Xia Rem Y, Forge of Destiny, or Virtuous Sons I believe. Something originally in English anyway because of previous ones listed and typically low quality translations.
