Have you read In the Realms of the Unreal by Henry Darger? He was an outsider artist and wrote 15,000+ pages in fifteen volumes over six decades for his fantasy world. He was in and out of mental institutions as a kid.

What am I in for?

>> No.22033540

Well I finally finished Titus Groan. That felt very, very long. But I liked it. I feel like I don't see many authors these days with such a knack for prose. It's one of those books where you could summarize the entire plot in just a few paragraphs because so much time is spent on just building the world, but a summary simply cannot capture the experience of reading it. I'll definitely move on to the other books at some point but I need a little break so I've started on something lighter and more recent for the time being.
One thing I was thinking of was how hard it would be to adapt this book into a movie, so I'm not surprised that nobody has made the attempt despite its age and popularity. Apparently there was a TV miniseries back in 2000 but I bet that's some low budget crap. How crazy did this guy have to be to call the book Titus Groan and the titular character is only two years old by the end of it.
A while back I was checking something about the book on Wikipedia, I forget what, but I accidentally saw the words "Flay versus Swelter." At the time I envisioned it referred to, say, a battle of wills between these two characters who hated each other. So you can imagine my surprise when it was an incredible chapter of combat between a thin bony old guy who creaks when he walks and an enormously fat chef. By all rights it should not have been as exciting as it was. And it was made more impressive by the fact that it was one of only two fight scenes in the entire book. Not that a book needs fights to be compelling, but this one really made them count.

GRRM has released numerous books, stories and worked on several TV Shows, all set in ASOIAF world. He's not lazy, he's just scatter brained and lost the steam to work on his main work. IIRC someone counted up all of his word-count released since the last ASOIAF book and it turned out he does 1k~ words per day on average. That's more than 90% of authors, I believe.

I thought the same and just started reading HPL's Complete stories chronologically. 2/3 volumes done, one left. Can confirm the utter uselessness of that chart. Most of the charts are just a way for lazy fags to feel like they "know the author" from reading a few highlighted titles. Picrel is a reddit comment I have saved, it's closer to the truth than anything I've seen here.
There is no "preferred order" other than by publication date. While stories can be grouped into thematic clusters, they are still largely independent, even Raymond Carter stories.
Any chart would be descriptive, rather than prescriptive. Just pick any "best of" collection if you don't want to commit to reading the entire HPL writings.

I'm not a fan of grimdark myself, because I just don't particularly like bleak settings. The idea of making a 'genre' specifically to counteract that is stupid to me though. It feels insecure. Some stories are just more optimistic than not. My favourite author is probably Pratchett and he's the most bitter optimist there was. What the fuck happens in 'hopepunk'? It's a broad sweeping notion of 'story is optimistic', but that's anywhere from Superman being a paragon of good and justice to a decent dude doing a decent thing to the power of love and friendship literally destroying evil.

As for short stories, same answer as >>22034289. Either get the complete 5 volumes if you're so committed, or pick ANY modern collection like Total Recall or some shit to get a taste of his stories.
I recommend reading Volume 1, and then deciding if you want to continue with the whole thing or switch to "best of" collections. Thanks for the chapter. You can get likes just for being first comment so people openly just scroll down as quickly as possible when a popular novel updates so they can write it first. Plus all the people who just write it to get a like from the author (worth 5 likes) or to get achievements for leaving a bunch of comments (can get a better profile border). Basically it just shits up the comment section, I've seen less popular works where people just straight up go "second comment for more likes" and more popular ones where the top comment has edits to include actual thoughts on the chapter after they won the tftc race.

I mainly wanted to keep it in a repetitive character 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 kind of cycle, but then I had to replan my plot. I'll just use it as a lesson for next time I draft anything. But I don't think I'm made for RR.

If it's RR, maybe stick to just one or two major POVs and occasionally their assorted minor characters, honestly. Using multiple POVs isn't that bad, so long as you don't use it nigh-exclusively to cliffhanger things.

I was mainly doing it because a friend told me to develop it more. But he's not a big reader so I shouldn't have listened to him. It went in ways I didn't expect though, which was a fun creative process. I got the premise of the first chapter rejected by everyone I sent it to, so it was nice not to just throw it away and make another story for the market.

It really depends. Teens love having like 6 or more pov narrations because it makes the story feel more complex and demanding without actually being like that. Things like Boogiepop or Baccano, or The Wire and Heroes on tv.

TV's different, admittedly, because there's less 'attached' to a POV switch because the camera is inherently detached. Also The Wire and Heroes are hardly that contemporary these days.

Nothing worse for RR than more than one PoV. The stories are supposed to be light, full of action and easily consumable in a serialized, scheduled manner. It's not a place for long-winded stories or experimental storytelling (if you want to achieve anything resembling success).

>(if you want to achieve anything resembling success).
Why would I post on RoyalRoad if I cared about success? If I wanted money, I'd just write to the market for what agents want (YA postcolonial queer cli-fi), then play up how mixed race and neurodivergent I am.
I just got very bored of writing a lot every day since I usually do poetry and I've have 30+ hour weeks of work on top of writing 3000 words a day. I understand why RR got to where it is with very simplistic prose and game systems; it takes much less energy to write it. Even if I'm not that stylistic, it's still hard to think of varying sentence structure, at least.
The way Golden Age Sci Fi / Fantasy authors wrote so much is fucking crazy. Especially when they only had shitty typewriters.

I'm no writer, but when you compare him to other recent Fantasy authors, such as Jacob Peppers or Brandon Sanderson, he strikes me as more well rounded and polished.

Paolini really wrote this at 15? It's no great feat of literature and borrows heavily from other sources, Star Wars for the plot and LOTR for the world building. Still 15? What did you guys think? It wasn't awful. Listening to it on audiobook now, for lack of something else to read and some parts are fun. I'm giving it a 6/10 so far.

>The Pooner at Arkham
At first, I did not know how I would fare in Arkham. I had moved there to work at the asylum as both a nurse and night guard. There were faint whisperings about something lurking the hallways at night, but I ignored it at first. On my first night, I was handed a torch and instructed to mind the hallways; I was to ensure no patient got out. So, as the night darkened, I walked through the asylum's hallway with torch in hand. There was nothing out of the ordinary. It was not so bad being a security guard, I thought, until I heard the sound. A deep yet girlish voice came from behind: "I'm trans."
I turned. In the shadows, the thing appeared. I wish I had not shone my light on it, for it was a harrowed pooner, whose eyes stared at me as if possessed of no vitality. Their face was like a pale deep sea fish in the halo of my torchlight. I knew these abominations were locked up in asylums, yet the sight of it filled my head with stamping heartbeat and the rush of fear. As I walked back, the light's halo expanded until the entire insanity-inducing body was exposed.
The pooner was bare naked, to my horror. Rolls of fat sat horribly upon its waist below a flat chest covered in cicatrices. It lurched forward, its cock swaying like a gutted pig on a slaughterhouse meat hook. This sexual member had no function, I came to understand, other than being a crude statuette and fetish for whatever insanity helped construct it. The thing dangled from an overgrown bush covered in foetid slime mould; it extended down past those pale thighs, covered in a patchwork of surgical scars, cellulite, and newfound hair. The scars were by far the most unsightly, as though from Mengele's hackwork that carved out sizeable steaks from the pooner's once feminine body.
The hair seemed especially unnatural, brought about by whatever horrid combination of synthesised hormones, hitherto unknown to real and cisgender men. The pooner's body resembled that of a cadaver's, as its terrible, maddening 'penis' had been grafted from the flesh on its thighs. A crooked chunk of flesh, rolled into a mockery of a human appendage, was sutured with the intricate stitching, akin again to some mad doctor at Birkenau. Ye gods, the sight of it almost made me catatonic! The cock weeped with pus and the smell of rot emanated from it; necrotic wounds littered the corpse flesh like little gates to hell.

Surprisingly this is a really rare premise. A huge part of what makes the genre of urban fantasy "urban fantasy" is the fact the magical and fantasy elements are already part of the mundane world. I'm struggling to think of any t.b.h. The few I can are YA for young girls or not really urban fantasy (The Magicians)

>The critically acclaimed cult novelist makes visceral the terrors of life in Jim Crow America and its lingering effects in this brilliant and wondrous work of the imagination that melds historical fiction, pulp noir, and Lovecraftian horror and fantasy.
>Chicago, 1954. When his father Montrose goes missing, twenty-two year old Army veteran Atticus Turner embarks on a road trip to New England to find him, accompanied by his Uncle George—publisher of The Safe Negro Travel Guide—and his childhood friend Letitia. On their journey to the manor of Mr. Braithwhite—heir to the estate that owned Atticus’s great grandmother—they encounter both mundane terrors of white America and malevolent spirits that seem straight out of the weird tales George devours.
>At the manor, Atticus discovers his father in chains, held prisoner by a secret cabal named the Order of the Ancient Dawn—led by Samuel Braithwhite and his son Caleb—which has gathered to orchestrate a ritual that shockingly centers on Atticus. And his one hope of salvation may be the seed of his—and the whole Turner clan’s—destruction.
>A chimerical blend of magic, power, hope, and freedom that stretches across time, touching diverse members of one black family, Lovecraft Country is a devastating kaleidoscopic portrait of racism—the terrifying specter that continues to haunt us today.

>“Another virtuoso blend of horror, action, and humor. . . . Fans will find this a worthy sequel.”— Publishers Weekly In this thrilling adventure, a blend of enthralling historical fiction and fantastical horror, Matt Ruff returns to the world of Lovecraft Country and explores the meaning of death, the hold of the past on the present, and the power of hope in the face of uncertainty. Summer, 1957. Atticus Turner and his father, Montrose, travel to North Carolina to mark the centennial of their ancestor’s escape from slavery, but an encounter with an old nemesis leads to a life-and-death pursuit. Back in Chicago, George Berry is diagnosed with cancer and strikes a devil’s bargain with the ghost of Hiram Winthrop, who promises a miracle cure—but only if George brings Winthrop back from the dead. Fifteen-year-old Horace Berry, reeling from the killing of a close friend, joins his mother, Hippolyta, and her friend Letitia Dandridge on a trip to Nevada for The Safe Negro Travel Guide. But Hippolyta has a secret—and far more dangerous—agenda that will take her and Horace to the far end of the universe and bring a new threat home to Letitia’s doorstep. Hippolyta isn’t the only one keeping secrets. Letitia’s sister, Ruby, has been leading a double life as her white alter ego, Hillary Hyde. Now, the supply of magic potion she needs to transform herself is nearly gone, and a surprise visitor throws her already tenuous situation into complete chaos. Yet these troubles are soon eclipsed by the return of Caleb Braithwhite. Stripped of his magic and banished from Chicago at the end of Lovecraft Country, he’s found a way back into power and is ready to pick up where he left off. But first he has a score to settle . . .

About half way through the The Farseer Trilogy and can't decide if I really like it. Martial World impressed me with how crisp the cultivation system with all its mechanics was but I kinda lost interest in the plot before he even got off his initial world. Really, it takes all the clichés of cultivation stories and executes them surprisingly well and even manages to treat side characters and antagonists like they aren't just AYM cannonfodder.

Unfortunately, I spoilered myself by reading the wiki so I might never actually finish it.

Also, Bella was pale and average in Twilight, meanwhile the guy must obviously be at least somewhat attractive. The double standard is outrageous.
