The affinity for gothic aesthetics is a uniquely Western thing. Latin Americans also like gothic literature because they’re Western despite the fact they don’t live in first world countries.

All the dark Grimm fairytales, and a lot of the folklore and superstition that later horror fiction was based on, emerged from European peasant communities, and few writers have had it as rough as the European peasant. But there obviously is a connection between the 'decadent' darkness of Poe, Lovecraft, Ligotti etc. and a bourgeois life in which you indulge in the thrill of horror as you would a private passion.

All the data shows the harsher life becomes for a demographic the MORE they gravitate toward the wholesome and the LESS they seek out the gritty and "realistic".
They gravitate toward the "edgy" in faux impoverished areas like India or Mexico where they still have multigenerational households, populating multigenerational villages, where their ethnic and racial spirit is strong and outward bound.
