I defended her writing based on Conversations With Friends being decent. However, if you read Beautiful World Where Are You? it's clear her characters are self-inserts and she's preaching to her audience. You can still find things to enjoy in CwF because that shit is toned down relative to what's good about that book--but if you defend her based on the idea "she's not her characters tho!!" you're either a complete retard or haven't read her latest book.

She came to fame based on writing a personal essay about herself and the emails in BWWAY are clearly preaching to the audience, anon. Also, the literary editor (watered down Francis) and writer character (muted Bobby) are obviously stand-ins for herself. Combine the above with the fact she wrote the same book again and it gives you a fairly clear picture about her personality and beliefs.

That said, CwF is still decent and most of the criticism is reactionary to literary persona. But BWWAY is just complete fucking trash and actually validates what anons had to say about her other books.

Second, Rooney admits her work is highly personal and based on her own experiences and subjective understanding of her own experiences. Do you want direct evidence of the above?

I'll add now that the reason BWWAY failed so badly is she tried to work in too much shit about gender and class instead of focusing on bringing out the internal lives of her characters (which is what I'd say is her main talent as a writer after reading CwF; although it's limited to Francis and the copy/paste/blend rehash of CwF to BWWAY was awful).

They do reflect her personal beliefs and her work falls apart on the thematic level. What you're emphasizing is that you enjoy the melodrama and personality in her writing--to each their own. However, other than Francis all of her characters are weak and the way she deals with "class consciousness" in her work is just awful. Francis's dad is a drunk? Ok, a bit cliched (especially for Ireland) but good enough--you did a nice subtle job with her decent into self-harm so the focus is in a good place and I can over look the cliches. The mentally ill (again?) writer's boyfriend in BWWAY is a bisexual working-class manlet whose friends do the exact same scene twice (i.e. looking up the writer on Wikipedia and talking about how much money she must make)? Wow, that's some cutting commentary on class distinctions and becoming isolated due to social mobility--bravo.
