it's not exactly light fucking reading. his taste in books is as dark and twisted as his fucking worldview. In the show, he's seen reading "The King in Yellow," a collection of stories by Robert W. Chambers that deals with madness, the supernatural, and existential dread. It's not exactly bedtime reading, if you know what the fuck I mean. But hey, if you're into that kind of shit, go ahead and give it a try. Just don't blame me if you end up in a padded fucking cell, seeing cosmic horror around every goddamn corner.

What a strange person you are. The king in yellow is just a mediocre horror novel.

It's a book by Jack Torrance, but instead of consisting solely of the sentence "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy," it says " Alright, Alright, Alright," over and over again.

It's the Upanishads. You can see it if you zoom in the page of the book in a higher resolution pic.

Don't laugh at me but straight after the show I bought king in yellow and my /lit/ journey began.
'True detective s1' was full of sudo- philosophical quotes and IMHO it was zeitgeist-defining akin Silence of lambs or X-files as defining detective of 90s.
The yellow king book was meh though.
But the themes from the show are common with /lit/s rent-free s , McCarty, Pynchon, Dumas, etc

I've actually hunted after this edition of the Upanishads but it seems to be a prop made for the show. Funny because this particular scene isn't even in the show..

No I mean it was TV series
From wiki:
True Detective's first season explores themes of philosophical pessimism, masculinity, and Christianity; critics have analyzed the show's portrayal of women

I’ve been reading the king and yellow to help me fall asleep, it’s ok. Horror is hard to write in a way that is scary to generations after film and games captured dread so well. Outside of steven king does anyone have recommendations?

off topic but this show's conception of nechian philosophy is so juvenile and pedestrian that it's distracting. clearly demonstrates the limits of the medium of the television drama, despite its popular 'elevation'

If nechian means Nietzsche, why do you think that the show is conceptualizing his philosophy? I don't remember anything pointing specifically to Nietzsche, if anything, the antinatalist themes and overall pessimism were borrowed from Ligotti, I think there are even direct quotes in the show. Also Rust was, at least before the finale, obviously a materialist.

there is "time is a flat circle" which obviously came from thus spoke zarathustra, reggie ledoux says it to rust who proceeds to reply "what is that, nietzsche? shut the fuck up".
but I agree with you nonetheless, I don't see nietzsche's philosophy in the series

Yeah, true, I remember the scene well, but that wasn't "Rust's philosophy", on the contrary I always thought that he was kind of laughing at his pretentiousness, knowing that he's just a shitty redneck deadbeat.
