Worth reading?

It’s fun and interesting but really old. It makes broad claims that I am sure don’t reflect a current understanding of Ancient Mediterranean religions. If you read it you should go read more modern books as well to get a balanced perspective.

if read the west would be saved.

The scholarship may be just a bit out of date, but it's the kind of argumentative book that makes you look at something differently.

Absolutely worth it, just make sure it's not the only thing you read.

These are all good books but you don’t have read them all at once.

E.R. Dodds' The Greeks and the Irrational.

The Final Pagan Generation by Edward J. Watts;

Ancient Mystery Cults by Walter Burket

Greek Religion by Walter Burket

Babylon, Memphis, Persepolis: Eastern Contexts of Greek Culture by Walter Burket

Smoke Signals for the Gods: Ancient Greek Sacrifice from the Archaic Through Roman Periods Fred Naiden

Not him but thanks for the list.
I could only add The Homeric Gods by Walter F. Otto. Equally dubious scholarship but equally interesting book.

Is the scholarship out of date when it comes to his thesis or simply the evidence and knowledge he has and presents (i.e., does the thesis still hold up).

I liked it, rather general and broad in its claims, but worth reading.
