It’s fun and interesting but really old. It makes broad claims that I am sure don’t reflect a current understanding of Ancient Mediterranean religions. If you read it you should go read more modern books as well to get a balanced perspective.

The scholarship may be just a bit out of date, but it's the kind of argumentative book that makes you look at something differently.

Absolutely worth it, just make sure it's not the only thing you read.

Is the scholarship out of date when it comes to his thesis or simply the evidence and knowledge he has and presents (i.e., does the thesis still hold up).

I liked it, rather general and broad in its claims, but worth reading.
