Grimdark, to me, seems like "this is a setting where you shouldn't care about anybody because nothing good will happen to any of them and most people suck", so I don't really understand the appeal for the most part. I can sort of broadly understand "hey sometimes interesting stories are tragedies" and all that, but tragedies are often tragic because they feel like they could have been prevented. Grimdark, there IS no prevention, at most you'll get a temporary minor victory.

The Sword Defiant, Lands of the Firstborn #1 - Gareth Hanrahan (2023)

The Sword Defiant is, as the author says, a deconstruction of traditional fantasy. What that means for this book is that it does away with romanticized ideals and keeps most everything else. At various times throughout the book it's explicitly stated that this isn't how the story is supposed to go. How you feel about that may be the most important determinant for your enjoyment. To be clear, this isn't parody or satire, though it does have comedic moments. It's a serious and sincere attempt at providing a traditional fantasy story minus the feel-good assurances. By traditional fantasy I mean there are humans, elves, dwarves, and a host of fantastical creatures. There's an adventuring party, a dark lord, a talking sword, healing potions, magic, and a farm boy who has become a hero. It even starts in a tavern. Much of what can be expected from traditional fantasy is here, though its presentation differs.

Fifteen years ago a band of nine adventurers defeated the Dark Lord and took control of Necrad, the city that was his base of operations. That's where most stories would end, even though their lives and the world continue on. Alf is a human swordsman on the wrong side of forty-five and hasn't quite known what to do with himself ever since their victory. He's the keeper of Spellbreaker, a sentient sword that nullifies magic and was forged by one of the greatest elven smiths then empowered by the Dark Lord. It implores him to slaughter, provides comedic relief, and tells everyone what they don't want to hear. Spellbreaker is my favorite character in the book and one of the best talking weapons I've ever come across. There are also dream visions, which Alf dislikes, that have him seek out the one who gives him a prophecy, which he distrusts, of a rising evil. Thus he sets out on a new adventure to discover and defeat whatever it is that imperils the world, because at least he has a purpose again for his life. The other viewpoint character is his sister, Olva, who doesn't want to be involved, let alone have Derwyn, her son, be involved, in anything other than their life on the farm. Unfortunately for her, events transpire that force her to adventure as well, where she becomes far more involved than she could have ever imagined.

The eight other adventurers aren't faring much better, because this is their lives as they are now, and really always were, because life isn't how it goes in the songs and the stories. It's only in retrospect that can one can see the greater context of their life, and even then much remains unknown for why and how events came to pass. However, the understanding of that context may yet entirely change depending on what has yet to occur. The same can be said of this book's twists and turns that by the end seem to set the course for the trilogy, but I wouldn't be surprised if some later reveal provides an entirely different direction.

I received this eArc from Orbit through NetGalley.

I read this on January 28th. The approval email I received suggested waiting to post about it until two weeks before its release date, so I thought I may as well do that. I did consider posting immediately since I would've been the first review of the book on Goodreads. After reviews were up I asked those who wrote them whether there were any problems for them for posting right away. It didn't seem that there were, but it can be difficult to tell. Reposting to the activity feed or noting it again when it releases may be just as helpful, though I don't know how much that's done.

"Grimdark" has bee watered down so much that it now effectively means "anything bad happens at all to anyone in the story and isn't immediately undone".
So the appeal isn't tragedy, it's drama, which for some reason cannot be allowed to exist outside of tragedies nowadays. There's nothing more unappealing that spending an entire book or story arc building up to some sort of dramatic climax and then it all being undone either as a joke or a last minute deux ex machina.
It's not comedy, it's tragedy edging. Imagine the opposite, a comedy where every time there's a buildup to some sort of heartwarming or funny moment it's immediately crushed and destroyed by arbitrary tragedy. That's the REAL definition of grimdark, but it's incredibly rare compared to it's opposite.

When I referred to grimdark, I didn't mean "anything bad happens ever", I meant settings wherein the 'point' is that there's no real ultimate hope. The absolute most optimistic thing you can get in a grimdark setting is a small-scale victory that's temporary in nature. I just don't understand the appeal there.
>>21943102
I'm aware, but I don't really see how that's relevant. Schadenfreude is finding humour in the pain of others, usually because the pain is played out in a humourous manner or to those who deserve it. Grimdark is a miserable mess that tends to have the worst people suffering the least, so there's very little idea of catharsis to draw from it.
I'm not saying every story has to have a hopeful ending, I'm just saying that there should at least be a modicum of hope in the story, even if that hope doesn't come to pass, otherwise why should I care?

>> No.21943457

>>21943448
According to that definition reality is grimdark!
Having everything be eternally perfect forever is weird and unpleasant and makes the story not interesting. Who cares if something good happens if it was going to anyway? If everything's going to be fine why should I care about the characters?

>1.0 out of 5 stars Bordering on sexual child abuse
>Reviewed in Germany on December 13, 2022
>Verified Purchase
>The author starts the story with fairly predictable fantasies of a young male adult. The language used is simple, the storyline uncomplicated and predictable and only serves as a frame for the pornographic content. It becomes problematic when the protagonist summons his third ‚companion‘ a young girl in the body of a humanoid cat-race. Her body is described as being 4 foot (~120cm) tall, which is the avarage size of a six year old child. Further dialoges run on the theme of sumission and the pain sexual intercourse would cause based on the immaturity of the cat-girls body. At this point - in my oppinion- the author has crossed the line far into child porography and abuse and I quit reading.
>So in addition to boring sexual scenes and even more unimaginative LitRPG-content, this book arguably contains child pornografic content.

Anyone read this? Did the author really write a lolicon book? Or do germans really feel 6 year olds are 4 feet tall?

Lindon stirring up the Dreadgods directly results in tens of thousands of deaths. The fact that he's doing it to put an end to them permanently, and that they'd kill more people over time if they were left alone doesn't really change that.
The entire cast of Cradle are villain cliches flipped on their head. Yerin even gets comments about her path because the Skysworn normally wouldn't even consider allowing someone on a blood and swords path in, because they're almost always homicidal maniacs.

>> No.21944497

>>21944477
Yeah, I'm well aware of the idea that the majority of the main cast are "villain archetypes but actually just good people". Lindon seems like the big brute defined by boundless ambition, but he's directing that to a good cause. Yerin's a bloodthirsty fight-happy maniac, but she's kind-hearted enough to rein that it. Eithan's a sort of 2000 IQ giga-brain mastermind who sees everything, but he uses that to help people. Mercy I'm a bit less clear on (evil lady's beloved daughter, I guess, is the 'trope' she is), and Ziel doesn't fit at all because I'm like 80% sure he wasn't written to be a main cast member but he was popular enough that it just sort of happened. It breaks down a bit when you get past the initial trio.

Ziel was always going to be a main character, simply so there would be a parralel between each of them and one of the dreadgods. Ziel corresponds to the Wandering Titan, Lindon the Silent King, Yerin the Phoenix obviously, and Mercy the Dragon.
The fact that he doesn't fall into the villain archetypes I think is more so he can play the straight man complaining about how insane all the shit going on is.

>> No.21944539

>>21944523
I suppose that's fair. He's not completely divorced from the concept (wandering strong man from a broken clan hell-bent on revenge is a villain trope of sorts, though usually a more sympathetic one in comparison to the others' tropes being more usually straightforwardly villainous). Dross fits in as much as he's basically Wheatley from Portal 2.

At the beginning /lit/ had possibly the most tripcode users on the site. I heard that /o/ may have had more, but I never used the board. This can be seen in the archive by looking at the tripcode page. The content changes by whichever fad currently. The overall tenor has of course changed as different groups came to prominence and different boards became the most active. Most of what is now lit split off from /r9k/, as did a few other boards. That may have had the biggest culture change of any board.

And if those “trade” style books start popping up in the sci-fi genre, which they are, then sales will be even worse. I imagine. I mean, realistically, do they believe minorities are rushing out to buy and read these books? I doubt it. So it’s white people? But who? White women? But it’s sci-fi. How many women actually read sci-fi? Not enough to sustain minority authors or the genre. So, they expect white men to buy stories written by resentful minorities attacking them for a past they weren’t responsible for, the white men being alive today. Who is going to buy that garbage, when the point is to create a sense of awe and wonder? The purpose of sci-fi is lost. Go back to merit based publication, and I’ll buy it regardless of who wrote the book. But that’ll happen in a few decades maybe.

I started this last year because everyone was hyping it for the world building, but having this continent-spanning super expansionist empire that somehow is led by a small clique of childish cardboard cutout characters and with just small armies of normal soldiers going up against halfgods and supernatural enemies that all should wipe them out in a seconds, it all seemed so retarded.
And I know I'm reading a fantasy book and it doesnt have to be completely realistic, but there really is no explanatation whatsoever how they stand a chance against the odds

It doesnt help that the major plot point throughout half the book was that the protagonists were all protected by the gods of luck so they always escaped out of their predicaments because they were lucky.

I guess I will someday try to finish the book because I didnt hate it completely, just the basic scenario and the characters and most of the main plot lines

I finished mother of learning today. I enjoyed it.

The start is absolutely quite slow and feels like a slog, because it feels very "time loop" cliche. At some point it really picks up and is really fun to read. World is cool, characters are cool. Even the ending worked out well, although I admit in some places it felt a little handwavy.

Anyway it is a good fantasy book and do recommend it

World is probably the best part, but given it was actually written as a "run through" of the author's setting (and for some reason he decided to do a weird complex time loop plot instead of something more simply), makes sense that's the most fleshed-out part. There's a couple parts that're just "hey look at this cool place... Anyway".

The Blacktongue Thief was excellent but I still need to finish it, I think the same goes for Saint Death's Daughter but that one's fuzzier in my memory

i want to believe that an aspect of a truly well-written female character is her acknowledging her femininity and having to either overcome it, especially in male-oriented contexts, or needing to embrace it, when necessary. so again, it ultimately doesn't matter. LARPing as a male is still technically being a woman.

His brother said he's spending time with family, and last time I heard Scott in an interview, he said he's busy raising his daughters. Probably coming back as soon as they're grown up.

Yea theres barely any mention of sex in stormlight other than Shallan making dirty jokes. I did notice In oathbringer he writes a short kaladin flashback of him having a fling with a chick so people don't think he's a virgin lol
