I read it a little slower than I'd read a truly great book (started Wednesday, just finished this morning) but it was a genuine fun, interesting read the whole way through. The video game shit was goofy and there isn't much flourish to the story or how it's told (apparently the only bit is done in the translation), but it does is job in showing me sci fi ideas put together in a way I haven't seen them before.

Are you talking about necromancy? Because that's pretty much straight evil in all circumstances, and the way you phrase it as "cheating death" tends to support that view. Necromancy is the rape of natural law, the rape of the souls of the departed, the rape of their bodies, and the usurpation of whatever god has claim over their souls.
Now you can get around this in a few ways.
The first is the easiest and least offensive and risky: use whatever god of your choosing with the authority over life and death to grant it. This is typically best found in Christian literature, or at least literature with strong Christian allusion.
The other way is to go the complete opposite route, with atheist materialist perspective and no eternal soul, in which case evil doesn't exist and you can resurrect braindead meat puppets as much as you like and stick your brain in them if you so choose. There aren't very many of these Theseus' Ship stories because nobody likes them.

The Frugal Wizard's Handbook for Surviving Medieval England - Brandon Sanderson (2023)

This non-cosmere book most reminded me of a cross between H. Beam Piper's Paratime series and Philip K. Dick's We Can Remember It For You Wholesale, though by the end neither of those were that accurate. In the postscript Sanderson details how this book came to be and one of its primary inspirations was Jason Bourne, which it does lean heavily into that with its amnesiac protagonist who has a certain set of skills, though he's lacking in most other ways.

As can be seen on the cover, the wizard has a gun. That's because this is science fiction with some thriller elements set in an alternate Earth that has fantastical characteristics. Wizard is a semantic misdirect and there's no time traveling. There's an attempt to explain it all scientifically, though possibly not enough to where it could be considered Hard Fantasy. A reader can also expect many of Sanderson's recurrent themes such as redemption, persistence despite repeated failure, having your own world, being powerful relative to others, and chaste romance.

The main problem I had with this is that it lacks substance, which is fitting because so does its setting, as explained in-universe. Reading this felt like something that one reads to have read. It may well be an exemplar of highly readable mediocrity. The other problem was that I thought there was tonal dissonance with how humorous it tries to be, which is to say the humor didn't work for me this time. A lot of is because it's entirely out of place because it's for the reader rather than people the protagonist is talking to. The most reoccurring joke is him briefly reviewing stuff. There's also a bit of light poking at contemporary events and social trends.

There are several pages of art in this, many in a form similar to a four panel comic. Those that didn't have anything to do with the events of the book seemed entirely out of place, even if they were meant to show what other possibilities there were for the technology that allows the story to occur.

Fortunately for this book it's one of the secret projects, which will probably give it a wider readership than it would if it were by itself, because I don't really know who this would be for. Some of his other non-Cosmere works have similarities to this, but not enough to mention, and I didn't like them. Giving this a three may even be a bit high, but 2.5 seems a bit low, as there wasn't enough that I thought was worse than mediocre and enough that was better than decent.

I don't know what Sanderson's intentions for the ending were, but it allows for the slightest possibility of unifying everything he's ever written. The most likely interpretation though is that it's provide an idea of what may happen after their story has ended. I personally would find it very amusing if he did unify everything though. Maybe he can do that with one of his final works before retiring.

Just read Peculiar Soul from Royalroad up to chapter 50 and i have to say it sucks pretty bad.
The worldbuilding is in some parts good but in others very flimsy.
The powers are potentially pretty cool but unfortunately the mc never really uses them in cool ways.
The MC might be one of the worst i've ever read about though.
He doesn't have a backbone and is constantly manipulated and can't really do anything about it.
The second someone tells him something he takes it as truth.
He gets mocked and humiliated constantly. There's the obligatory angry woman who insults him and he just takes it.

I'm super bad at describing what books are about without spoilers. It's kinda GoT-inspired. There's court politics, usurpation, war, an ancient and wise forest being, a few ancient evils and some not so ancient evils that have background schemes, stuff like that.

I'm into the style of writing, which I can't really describe. The author is very clever with fantasy linguistics and the prose has a good flow that I like.

The Briar King is basically setup for the rest of the books. I was on the fence about the series until a bit into book two, but he really knocked that one out of the park with catharsis.

The vast majority of the cast members are just fine - except for the magic users. Especially Polgara is a total cunt throughout the whole book. This is the main problem. Most people don't want the fantasy part, they just want self insert relationships. Authors have to pander to these people and the stories suffer as a result.

Reading this at the moment, pretty good so far.

Plenty of medieval fantasy books have a setting modeled after 12th-15th century Europe (or 12th-14th if you're trying to exclude the Renaissance as not "High Medieval" enough)
But if you mean fantasy books actually set IN 12th-15th century Europe, well then you're in trouble because 99% of fantasy authors do not like to make Historical Fantasy, they need to concoct entirely new worlds and cosmologies in order to break out of their shells.

One of the rare examples I know of is the character Jirel of Joiry, a series of short stories written by C. L. Moore in the 1930s about a 13th or 14th century Breton countess with a similar attitude to Conan the Barbarian (or more aptly, Red Sonja). There's also Between Two Fires, set during the Black Death of the 1340s, but I personally find it much overrated and overshilled on /sffg/, especially on account of its grimdark edgelord attitude and fixation on protagonistic homosexual clergy.

There are a greater number of historical fantasy books set in the Dark Ages, due to association with the Matter of Charlemagne and Arthurian legend or Norse mythlogy. Furthermore, there is good historical "fantasy" in the sense that the real-world is recreated pretty much as-is but with the names and polities distinct in a sort of "alt-history", such as Guy Gavriel Kay's fiction and the Deryni novels, but these tend to abandon the supernatural as an immanent element.

I finished it, good Malazan fanservice.
Originally this was meant to be a series of 4 books, but recently it was increased to be 6, so this is the 4/6. In the previous book, the third, one of the complaints was it was too rushed. This one definitely takes a step back.
It's set a bunch of years after the previous book, the empire has full control over quon tali and the campaign into korel has just failed. This is about the campaign north to take over falar.
Main PoV is certainly tayschrenn and it's what the title is referring to, how he is forged into the high mage.
Some crimson guard PoVs along with expected dancer/kellenvand shenanigans.
I liked it, next book looks like it will be the start of the campaign into aren and also the start of the campaign on genbakis.

I really don't remember any awesomeness at all. The clock starts ticking in the first book, and also stops ticking that same book with the "endless winter" trope that basically manages to exterminate all food and livestock on the planet such that the lion's share of the population of humans starves. There's probably under 5,000 humans alive in the world by the end of the series, there's no sense of scale at all because the world is effectively already destroyed 3 books before the villains' plans are really put into action. It's so terrible, I hate how the villains are so monumentally overpowered and the heroes so utterly outclassed that they basically do nothing for 3000 pages until the villains trip on a banana peel in the last 10 pages of the last book and the plot just sort of fizzles out. An argument like that only works if it's not a REALLY common critique. It's like the "you meet an asshole once, okay, you met an asshole, you meet several assholes a day, you might be the asshole" deal. I might be wrong since I haven't read the books in awhile, but pretty sure not everywhere is having an endless winter. The only places with an endless winter are those took over by the Norns or under the Storm King's influence. The weather is still fucked, with worse summers and winters, but it isn't constantly cold. Simon even sees a harvest festival/religious holiday thing in the first book that is fine. Pretty sure the southern lands are actually getting too hot, with the Gnats starting to produce rapidly because of it.

In terms of the rest, I understand where you are coming from and it is a matter of personal taste. I personally don't mind the heroes constantly being outclassed and fighting for survival. It makes certain victories fill more weighty. I will say that the ending is the weakest part of the series and even left me disappointed. Felt too rushed and contrived. However, I still enjoyed the journey there.

The multivolume series is gay. I really like one-off standalone novels. The shorter the better. The Deep is my favorite.
