Just caught up on the last thread, here is my attempt at classy cuckold discussion.
If the modern attitude of cuckolding is being ignored by any woman you have an interest in in favor of another man, then how do I write the following:
In one story, I have a character who has a boyhood crush on a girl who is several years his senior, he fantasizes about being with her secretly, though he is her friend, he never reveals that he is romantically interested, and he is intimidated by her age over him. At some point another one of his friends successfully makes a move on her and those two end up together, the main character is horrified, left empty, emotionally damaged and it leads him to rush into a poorly conceived relationship to cope with the pain as an important story point.
This is based HEAVILY on my own experiences when I was 18 or so, to the point that only a few details are changed/omitted, but the way this thread reacts is that oversensitive people will think that it's fetishism. Is there ANY way to write this that you people who are sensitive about cuckold fetishization wouldn't object to?
And to the people saying that the protagonist being snubbed for another man makes you feel bad via sympathy, consider that may have been the point; you are meant to feel bad, you are MEANT to be in pain alongside the protagonist, that is part (the greater part I would argue) of sympathy. If you just want the character to always succeed in romance then that sounds more like you want the romance aspect of the character to be wish fulfillment, or at least super idealized, while the rest of the character's foibles and failures are perfectly okay as long as it doesn't remind you of romantic failure.
To end on a less classy note, it reminds me of that image of the emotionally stunted dude smoking weed and eating fruit loops while watching rick and morty, no bad feelings, no bad thoughts etc, and if you can't read on, due to the pain of being snubbed being terrible for you then stop being a sensitive little bitch.

No need for analysis, it's just cringe resentment against women having sex because they are in the group of men who didn't have that experience. Most men don't give a fuck because they purity is meaningless to them unless the girl's a slut. Only the most pathetic sub-group of incels keep raging about it, even in a thread about fucking fantasy books. This discourse couldn't happen anywhere else because in no other place people would pay attention.

Bro, normal people don’t care if their partner has had sex before. It’s expected after a certain point in time, in fact it should be a red flag if the girl you’re interested in is a virgin.

What >>21876719 said is 100% right. The only people screaming about virginity are resentful incels. I feel sorry for them almost, but in reality no one actually cares if the girl has had sex or previous relationships, it’s normal. Now if she’s a slut that sleeps with anyone and everyone that’s another story

There's a bit of a line I'm trying to identify with the post. I myself hate examples of actual cuck fetishism in literature, but I think it's had this magnifying effect in meme culture, separate from the incel handwave, where people have become hyper sensitive of it.

Finished the new Will Wight book today. It was pretty good. Wight's simple but endearing characters continue to be his strength, though the book has really awkward pacing. Like it's almost as if the first 150-ish pages are act 1 and 2, and then the entire remaining 3/4 of the book is act 3. Pretty good. A few funny moments. Nothing too deep, but it's clearly not trying to be anything more than it is (which seems to be "man who's lived several lives as being part of different sci-fi stories unites various people who seem to come from different genres entirely to be part of a ship of heroes to save the galaxy several times over"), so I'm not gonna be too weird about that. Honestly, the weakest part is the protagonist himself is a little bland. Not even in the sense of being relatively normal so everybody around him can be something interesting like Lindon, he's just... Kind of a guy who's doing stuff. Compared to how out-there every other major character comes across as, Varic's a little lacklustre.

Eh, I don't really care too much about the cover. It's pretty much exactly what Varic looks like at least, though it is just kind of 'him standing there'. I'm gonna assume there'll be six books total, given there's a point made of there being six crew members for the big fancy space ship (Captain, Pilot, Commander, Engineer, Sword and Knight) and the next book is called The Engineer, so probably a sort of 'each book is a bit more focal on that character' deal. We'll see if the trend of just kind of okay covers continues.

I read the first book and I guess I enjoyed it a good bit since I finished it in three days. But for some reason I don’t feel like reading the next two books. Usually if I liked the first book I’ll immediately get the rest of the series but not in this case. Is the rest of the trilogy worth reading? I want to write fantasy strictly in the American vein. Smith and Howard, shorter, atmospheric, dark, brooding, adventurous stories. Healthy influence from Melville, Poe, and Hawthorne. Frazetta and the Dillons. No more multi-book long doorstoppers, no more epic fantasy, good versus evil (although I don't have a problem with that theme specifically). And I'm not talking Martin, no mud-and-torches medieval moral grayness. High adventure. Frontiers. Not straight pulp, something with a little more weight than those adventure yarns like stuff out of old 1930s boys' magazines. Something closer to the heart and soul of a western instead of a Celtic myth or legend.

Good review. I read it today as well. Varic does come off as a bit bland at times; I think that he's really characterized as someone who feels kind of lost and somewhat directionless. He has more than enough power to do pretty much anything he wants, but he's also saddled with the knowledge that despite standing at the absolute pinnacle of human sorcery he still isn't enough to win the battles that need to be won. So he's a bit of a wandering doomer, which imo isn't quite as interesting to read about as someone who has a strong purpose and motivation.

Yeah, you got cucked. Writing that story into a fantasy story isnt the problem. JAMMING it into a fantasy story for no fucking reason is the problem, as it just utterly wrecks any other themes or arcs going on around it.

Reminder, THIS is who cannot comprehend the issue with an author jaggedly inserting his fetish/insecurity into their story.

JUST MY OPINION

But it seems to me like Brandon writes his female characters not the way he wants but the way he thinks he's "supposed" to. He's probably heard his whole career about how women in fantasy have one dimensional characters, how they're only there to be faceless trophies for the male protagonist and so on. So now he's aiming to give his female characters more depth, make them more emotionally complex, show their inner battles.
The problem is that he's a total nerd who's also a mormon. He doesn't understand women and all his attempts to get into his female characters' heads look silly and over the top

>> No.21878912 [DELETED]

Regarding cuckoldry, I think this is the primary means of identifying proper "literature." Cucking is a basic foundation of reality. Women exist to cuck men, this is their primary purpose. So any book which hews closely to reality will feature cuckoldry. But when a book takes a step away from reality and abandons cuckoldry, it can then become a proper work of some "sub-literary" genre, such as fantasy. If a "fantasy" work features cucking, it isn't really a fantasy story. It's not properly about fantastical things. It's about simple reality, but is wearing a fantasy skinsuit to fool you into reading about getting cucked. That's the difference between a work about normal "literary" topics but with a fantasy coating, and a work that is actually about fantastical things. People who actually like fantasy thus have an adverse reaction to anything containing cuckoldry, because they know they're just reading boring trash about the real world.

The Ursian Chronicles, which is mostly a varied amount of sword & sorcery stories that take place on the same world (continent, mainly) features the concept of the Dark King of the North, "a mighty dark king from the north will slay all of his own, then wage war on the rest of world, conquering everything before him". So there's this almost laughably evil dude up north who runs his own empire and flits around doing all sorts of shit. He's also an immortal sorcerer that disappears for x time when he's 'killed'.
His presence in pic related is more of a cameo but he features prominently in the Lerebus Shieldbreaker collection (five short stories, he's part of the last two or three) and the Kobalos trilogy which involves a direct confrontation with him.

The issue with cuckshit is that it IS a fetish, whether or not you have it. So readers have been exposed to authors who unironically get off to being cucks and insert it into their stories to masturbate to. It's equivalent to a book having excessive descriptions of characters taking shits, while it's entirely possible that you may have a real reason for that scene that is important to the story(say there's a cholera outbreak or something) you can't deny that a lot of times that kinds of thing comes up it's NOT solely to serve the narrative.
And likewise, even if it does serve the narrative and you even write it in such a way that it's clear you're not doing it with one hand, lots of people just don't want to read about all the main characters having diarrhea and shitting all over the place constantly.
If it's important to you and the story go ahead, put it in, just understand that there's going to be three groups of reactions to your story. People who don't care or are just engaged with the story, coomer fetishists who jack off the the MC getting cucked, and people who drop the book repelled and disgusted by the suggestion.

>even if it could have been interesting it's overshadowed by wanting to know what's going on the the first pov, ruining it
>finally cut back
>the climactic moment is over and the story has moved forward several days, completely skipping over the resolution
Yeah go ahead authors, just CUT OUT all the good parts of your entire story and leave ONLY the filler! That's the best possible way to write! You're basically touching on what I was getting at, that it's had a bit of a cultural magnification effect, whereas in classic literature or fantasy nobody would identify it as fetishistic until about maybe twenty years ago, but now that it's become a meme fetish and everyone knows about it people are hyper-sensitive to it. It's like if in 20 years someone's going to get to that part in Sword of the Lictor where it describes Severian taking off his boots, and will drop the book in revulsion going "Ugh! Footfags!"
I've never read cuckshit in any fantasy that was obviously fetishistic, but most of what I see people bitching about here (with the exception of that infamous rothfuss passage, which really does read as fetishistic and would shatter my sympathy with the character most likely) has a bigger problem: that the romance/book is just written like shit.

Just gotta know your audience, a man who hates bread is never going to be happy when you bring out an artisanal loaf fresh from the oven and put it infront of him.

And actually it's not just recent, I can say I'm reasonably free of mind poison but A LOT of old fantasy books are blatant fetish fuel. Like there's no fucking way you can read the sword of truth and tell me with a straight face the writer doesn't have a bdsm fetish.

I don't know whether shaving body hair ever extended into northern Europe as a regular cultural phenomenon, but keep in mind that throughout the middle ages and the Renaissance, the nude in art was invariably displayed without bodyhair, whether male or female; clearly they had to have shaven models in order to know what a nude body without its hair looked like.

The only time it bothers me is if it seems improbable that a character would survive. Oh and I don't believe that all complaints about plot armor are illegitimate, because there are certainly times when characters inexcusably escape death or injury beyond all the limits of suspension of disbelief, and I've encountered many such myself, but almost every time I've heard the term "plot armor" used on the internet, it's simply whining from post-ironic neckbeards that such-and-such popular character was not killed off, usually with some bland canned response about "providing a satisfying conclusion to so-and-so's narrative arc" because they literally cannot comprehend conclusions that don't involve killing everybody off.

Plot armor tends to be countered with the simple rule that stories are about the exceptional, however the more and more exceptional survival seems (especially if there's no actual failures at all), the less and less weight the counter-argument holds. Plot armor isn't about the plot, it's about the execution/appearance. Much like Mary Sue, the issue isn't that there's a charismatic girls everyone loves and cares about, it's that the reader doesn't agree or buy into it.
Plot armor complaints are sometimes about a specific character surviving a situation that beggars belief, but often it's a recurring pattern of somehow everyone surviving these sorts of situations routinely to the point where any sense of danger is gone and it's no longer impressive or surprising that a character enters a no win deadly situation and comes out perfectly unharmed. The often suggested solution is to just kill off a few minor characters to "up the stakes", but this could just as easily backfire or have no effect since now there's still little to no worry about the main characters and also all the side characters become disposable and uninteresting. The correct fix would be to just execute the writing better, make each scenario seem more dangerous by describing near misses, minor injuries etc... add additional steps or resources a character uses to survive, like getting shot in a bulletproof vest and surviving but with the vest ruined and unable to take another shot thus raising the stakes over not ever having it in the first place, etc, etc...
Lots of these issues are that most people can realize they don't like something or that there's something wrong, but don't know enough to provide a working solution.
The root of the problem is probably from the other side, writers not being willing/able to see their stories from the outside and projecting their goals/expectations on a scene that doesn't actually support them.

>> No.21880364

>>21880352
Or, hell, let a character win but come out hurt. Either lasting injuries or some trauma or something else. Not every victory needs to come that way, but if you have a lot of "barely-scraped by" victories with no real lasting impact on the character, it's a little underwhelming.

Sometimes injuries can get boring if they never really affect the characters, or on the contrary annoying and unpleasant if they do. That's why I like consumable resources. Start out your scenario with no extra consumables, then play it out and every time you get into a situation where by all rights someone should die or be seriously injured, figure out some consumable and retroactively add it in at the start. Be sure to have all/most of them run out by the end and sprinkle in a few lucky breaks and minor injuries for spice.
>sneak up on the first enemy using the element of surprise
>avoid stepping on a landmine because of a previously acquired map
>get surprised and hit with a shotgun in the chest but survive because of a vest
>too many enemies, friend needs to stay behind to hold the line leaving MC alone for the final leg of the mission
>get ambushed by a group and narrowly defeat them by collapsing the roof using a grenade, miraculously the MC survives but in the process debris lands on the him and he gets a concussion and a limp
>trips and falls during the next fight serendipitously dodging an unseen sniper shot
>but the sniper moves in under cover and the MC is too injured to escape in time, but the friend from before saves him just in time, having managed to escape the previous situation when the enemies were distracted by the MC collapsing that building
Plot armor a mile thick, but every situation seems at least reasonably plausible and increasingly dire as time goes on

I knew all the worthless fuckups of the science fiction and feminist fantasy crowd from the Bay area convention crowd of the 60s onward (Zimmer Bradley, Delaney, Ellison, Asimov, Kramer etc) were all pedophiles and pedophilia defenders but fucking hell I didn't know the Eddings were monstrous fuckups in their own way and were jailed for 11 counts of child abuse of two four year old adoptees, a girl and a boy.
Apparently they had a cage for them and shit.
>According to the Black Hills Weekly, February 11, 1970, the couple's four year old adopted child was found in the pitch-black basement of their home, locked in a cage, wearing nothing but a tee-shirt. The child had been physically abused with a heavily swollen and disabled hand with scrapes, and heavy bruising about his body, as well as evidence of prior beatings. Investigators during the trial noted that there were restraints on the walls, no lighting, and the strong smell of cat urine in the basement.

The book was a limited edition release, and there were no official ebook versions of it made since it came out in 1999 and John Pelan is dead. I have no idea where that epub came from but some anon must have got his hands on the book and attempted to make an OCR'd version of it, because the epub is full of errors and random omissions. Half of the stories become unreadable past the midway point, as if the person making the damned epub didn't bother to check past the first couple of paragraphs to make sure his shitty OCR software didn't garble the words, which it did. Worldcat shows only two copies publicly available in the USA (and one in Canada), and one of those copies is in the Library of Congress.

Even if it is too long like what I said in my last post, I still think it's definitely worth it.

Doesn't follow the writing style of scifi so scifi nerds don't like it, replaces magic with technology so fantasy nerds don't like it. By contrast magitech is way more mainstream and commercially is probably more popular than scifi and fantasy put together.
In other words:
>Magic made of technology == unpopular
>Technology made of magic == very popular
An important distinction.

Peake and Gaiman were absolute cunt destroyers in their time.

Women who were fat in their 20s and 30s can't be successful writers though.
