Thoughts on this book by St. Augustine?

>> No.21858048

Haven't read this one but "City of God" and "Confessions" are two of my favorite books so this one is probably good too. For being 1600 years old he is really easy to read you can definitely see his rhetorical training in his writing.

I find both those difficult to read but not this for some reason.

If you already read City of God you should definitely pick up some more Augustine, he's a fucking blast and he has tons of shorter writings that are just plain fun. Christine Doctrine is a good start, The Trinity is a major work so you have to be really into its topic but it's also great. But there are so many others. Even his letters are fantastic. I also highly recommend biographies of him by Peter Brown (the major one you probably should read) and Giovanni Papini (if you want to read something by a fascist Catholic mystic former Nietzschean).

Thanks for the recommendations. I have been reading other saints trying to recreate the feeling I got reading "City of God" but most aren't as good of writers as him even if the knowledge they are putting down is enlightening. I just finished "The Interior Castle" by St. Teresa of Alvia and I think she is my second favorite so far. I just started reading the ICS collection of St John of the Cross and it seems pretty good so far. I know he was highly educated like St Augustine so I have high hopes I am just on his poetry right now and I like it even though I am not too into poetry.

One of his books reportedly, haven't read it yet. Augustine is generally very based and not as dry as Aquinas, a lot more Platonist too, so you should find him enjoyable if you have a soft spot for Plato like I do.

This work is really essential if you want to grasp the historic understanding of the Trinity, especially western Christianity's theology of it.

Yeah, some people think it more important than City of God even. As I have said though, haven't read it yet.

Very bad book. You should read it to realize how bad the trinity concept is. The book is relatively long if you want to cut it down you can read the last chapter which is Augistine's summary of his main ideas.
