Hi /lit/.
I've been trying to read more. But I never really enjoyed it. until I discovered I was just reading the wrong stuff. I just needed better authors. I picked up American Gods, Neverwhere and a few other Neil Gaiman books and I adored them.

I hear great things about Terry Pratchett and the passages I've read I really like. But he's written quite collection.

Where do I start?

Someone will be along shortly to post the rec reading order image, I'm sure. Good luck to you, they're fun, light, very humorous fantasy books.

If you like Neil Gaiman, also consider checking out Jack Vance, M John Harrison, Mervyn Peake, Gene Wolfe, and John Crowley.

The colour of magic

Anywhere.

Seriously, just pick a book. Read the synopses and just pick one you like the sound of. There's very few books that are direct sequels in the Discworld universe, so just pick one and start reading.

There it is

also, don't start with the Rincewind books and if you want to read the witch books you can probably skip Equal Rites, frankly

Where would you suggest starting???

Wyrd Sisters, Mort, Guards Guards, or Small Gods.

Although really the order doesn't matter so much... I read Men At Arms first, and then after that pretty much read any Terry Pratchett book I could get my hands on, mostly through the caprices of the local library system. And I enjoyed them all. So really it isn't THAT important, but starting with one of the books above means you're starting with the introduction of one of the central characters that the books tend to be based around - there's 5 or 6 very loose 'storylines' in the Discworld universe, most notably Death stories, Rincewind stories, Watch stories, and Granny Weatherwax stories. And then there's the Wizards who kind of bounce around... good times...

*ahem* superior chart incoming.

>> No.2185531

Start with Guards! Guards!. The City Watch subseries is the best in terms of characters, plotting, and quality. After that you'll probably want to try the Rincewind and Death novels. Although they fluctuate in quality, especially near the start.

Oh yeah, and Small Gods is bloody brilliant. Read it when you get the chance.

i don't know why everyone likes small gods so much. it just feels too try-hard to me, if you know what i mean. you probably don't, so i'll elaborate i guess. when pratchett tries to be philosophical or make a statement about the human condition, it really never works for me. like the end of carpe jugulum or gaspode's speech to angua in men at arms or the various other times he does such. small gods is just one long collection of that moment.
but this is just my opinion, and i would like to know what quality of the book endears you to it

oh also my two cents on where to start: definitely watch series and then rincewind and death. i also seem to disagree with most people on the rincewind series, as i loved colour of magic and the light fantastic whereas nobody else on /lit/ seems to.
i guess i'm just weird.

oh and the moist von lipwig books are good fun, but best read after the watch series to gain some familiarity with ankh-morpork

That's a fair point. I can see how it could get preachy.

You're a casual reader who likes simple writing and stories. Just look in the science fiction or fantasy sections of your local bookstore and you're bound to find something you like.

They just make me depressed now, fortunately I've read them all. But ever since I watched that interview with him about his alzheimer's, I just picture this frail old man having to dictate his books to his assistant whenever i look at the discworld collection on my bookshelf.

I like them too but they're not on the same level as the rest of the series and a little different stylistically. That's why I think they're not the best place to start.

>>2185574
oh yeah i completely agree with the difference in style
