interestingly the 'professional autists' remark is more accurate than you probably realise. studies have shown that an autistic-like tendancy is found in many authors (virginia woolf for example). thing is it's actually the opposite of 'nothing to do with the real world' in that they often have a predominant sensitivity and perception of the 'particular', that is the qualities of the world and our sensations/experiences as they actually exist, rather than some abstracted, 'common sense' apprehesion of 'how the world is' (i.e. capitalism is a 'natural' given etc., gays are obviously bad etc. etc. etc.)
