>Once again it was the pure thunder of the charge. The strange camaraderie of men bent to a single, fatal purpose. Hummocks, scrub, and the bones of the Vulgar Holy War’s dead rushed beneath. The wind bled through chain links, tousled Thunyeri braids and Tydonni crests. Bright banners slapped against the sky. The heathen, wicked and foul, drew closer, ever closer. One last storm of arrows, these ones almost horizontal to the ground, punching against shield and armour. Some were struck from their saddles. Tongue tips were bitten off in the concussion of the fall. The unhorsed arched across the turf, screamed and swatted at the sky. Wounded mounts danced in frothing circles nearby. The rest thundered on, over grasses, through patches of blooming milkwort waving in the wind. They couched their lances, twenty thousand men draped in great mail hauberks over thick felt, with coifs across their faces and helms that swept down to their cheeks, riding chargers caparisoned in mail or iron plates. The fear dissolved into drunken speed, into the momentum, became so mingled with exhilaration as to be indistinguishable from it. They were addicted to the charge, the Men of the Tusk. Everything focused into the glittering tip of a lance. The target nearer, nearer … The rumble of hooves and drums drowned their kinsmen’s song. They crashed through a thin screen of sumac …Saw eyes whiten in sudden terror. Then impact. The jarring splinter of wood as lances speared through shield, through armour. Suddenly the ground became still and solid beneath them, and the air rang with wails and shouts. Hands drew sword and axe. Everywhere figures grappled and hacked. Horses reared. Blades pitched blood into the sky. And the Kianene fell, undone by their ferocity, crumpling beneath northern hands, dying beneath pale faces and merciless blue eyes. The heathen recoiled from the slaughter—and fled

How's the age of madness trilogy by Joe Abercrombie? I read the first trilogy but I'm unsure about the time jump continuation. I remember enjoying the cripple dude and the mercenary that he spends some time talking to during a siege. Most of the other characters were okay, the magus? was kinda shit. What are some scary, pulpy vampire (or werewolf) books with human protagonists who fight back?
No post-apocalypse, no space vampires, just classic stuff.
Bonus points for stories where the monster's identity is a secret or stories where the hunt takes the mc to different countries.

What are some fantasy settings where the way that the gods are handled is particularly captivating? Especially if the gods have elements among their domains.

>> No.21843872

>>21843845
Discworld, probably. Gods are kind of mostly just laid-back assholes who occasionally smite atheists for trying too hard and they just play board games with each other that determine the course of fate, which often doesn't account for mortals having free will so they fuck up a lot. One of the most in-depth gods is Om, who's sort of a catch-all god for a not-Egypt area, except in his introductory book, Small Gods, people have stopped worshiping him specifically, and moreso they worship the idea of his religion, so he's actually a mostly powerless turtle because literally only one person actually believes in him properly. There's also the "goddess of things that get stuck in drawers" who is immensely powerful because she's always cursed whenever something gets stuck in a drawer. She uses said power to make things get stuck in drawers.

So this really isn't technically bad, for what it is. A given chapter might be better than one from another book in this bottom-level genre. The problem is that it's just hundreds of pages of monologue. There are no other characters or character interactions. There is a flash of hope when the MC gets a pet, but it turns out to be largely mute and retarded. More monologue. Then he meets up with a human he can speak with in a situation with good story potential. It's over in two chapters, back to a loner narrating his life. It's wearying. Another character appears, gone in pages. Next time it's a group, but he can only speak to one, and he has no relationship with her. I made it into book 2, but it might be time to pull the plug on this.

I would suggest you stop looking into it here because the books are way better the less you know about them going into it. The books are almost designed for schizo readers as there are some plot revelations you can get in shadow of the torturer through schizo connections of info. They’re books that require mental interaction from the reader to get their true value as books

Reverend insanity because basically all the gods(immortals or venerables depending on what you’re looking for) are fucking assholes because they basically have to be. They have to fight through 100 different proxy battles because a fight against anyone of their strength level is at the very least super fucking expensive. They’ve only gotten to their level of strength by either having someone stronger make them into their proxy, or have to fuck over everyone else to get enough money to fund their cultivations so it breeds really odd characters that are typically far stronger or smarter than the mc in a fundamental way

Yeah, it alternates between characters every chapter. Some of them join up together later on in the story and in the second book. So you get chapters with several of the characters together rather than them individually.

A private detective in a fantasy world finds out that an old buddy from the war has died and he's to find the widow for the reading of the will.

Bro, I don't if the book 1 or 2 were like this, but the story has the charaters talking constantly. Like, too fucking much. It might be the beginning was like that, but I wish the story as a whole was as well. I'd actually prefer the protagonist was just a looner.

Not always, really. The most popular LitRPGs tend to have pretty clear archetypes for their characters. He Who Fights With Monsters is the most tricky to pinpoint but he's broadly a Rogue-type. Primal Hunter is just a Ranger, Defiance of the Fall is pure unga bunga Warrior, etc. It depends on the way the LitRPG system works, though, because some don't even really have that sort of delineation.

The good fan-fiction explore/create new boundaries of the story or lore and better, they deviate from cannon (not just some events from the source with modifications, but brands new events)
The bad fan-fiction is the standard, god-like system

It's probably a case of attempting a relatively direct translation. Asian languages tend to be a bit more contextual/dense, so you have to put in more work to get the proper notions across in English translations (translations from English to Japanese have their own problems of course), but that requires creativity on the part of whoever's localising, so you often get very 'stock phrase' sort of deals like "It can't be helped", which is a particular thing in Japanese that has different meanings depending on context, and "it can't be helped" fits at least a few of those, but it's not a one-size fits all translation.

Right place, right time. He filled a void, and released enjoyable stories regularly that didn't end on cliffhangers with deus ex machina.

I think there is a video panel with Sanderson and a few other authors talking, where Sanderson introduced his laws, which he says he uses so there are no ways to write yourself into a corner and use a deus ex machina to get out of it. The other authors argued that using his laws would make writing harder because you can't pull shit out your ass when pressed.
Sanderson was a wholesome author who knew what readers wanted (stories that weren't recycled ass pulls), and delivered on time. But with publishers pressuring him to put in gay shit, and him having to write a bunch of YA shit to sell so he can write his cosmere, I stopped reading his works.

Sanderson cannot compete with bakkers prose
>They jostled before him, now as eager to avoid as to close with him. “Where are your mighty warriors?” Cnaiür screamed. “Show me your mighty warriors!” His limbs fevered by all-conquering hatred, he cut them down, weak and strong alike, fighting like one mad with heartbreak, hacking shields until arms were broken, pounding figures until they stumbled and spouted plumes of blood. The advancing ranks engulfed them, but still Cnaiür and his Utemot killed and killed, until the turf beneath their feet became bloody muck, treacherous with corpses. The Nansur relented, scrambled back several paces, gaping at the Utemot chieftain. Sheathing his broadsword, Cnaiür vaulted the bodies heaped before him. He caught a wounded straggler by the throat, crushed his windpipe. Roaring, he heaved the thrashing man above his head. “I am the reaver!” he cried. “The measure of all men!” He sent the body crashing at their feet. “Is there no cock among you?” He spat, then laughed at their astonished silence. “All cunts, then.” He shook the blood from his mane, raised his broadsword anew. Panicked shouts erupted among the Nansur. Several threw themselves against the men packed behind, mad to escape his deranged aspect. Then rumbling hoofs breached the din of the greater battle, and all heads turned. More Utemot horsemen exploded into their midst, impaling some Nansur on long lances, trampling others. There was a brief moment of pitched melee, and Cnaiür hammered down two more, his sword now blunted to an edged iron pipe. Then the men of the Nasueret Column were fleeing, casting away weapons and shields as they ran. Cnaiür and his kinsmen found themselves alone, chests heaving, blood streaming from unstaunched wounds. “Ayaaah!” they cried as cohort after wild cohort galloped by them. “War and worship!”

ChatGPT Prompt: Write something from R. Scott Bakker in the style of Brandon Sanderson

Kellhus stalked through the wreckage of the battlefield, his eyes cold as a winter storm. The fallen lay all around him, twisted in agony, their blood staining the earth black. His face was a mask of grim determination as he surveyed the carnage, searching for his prey.

He had come too far to be stopped now. The fate of the world hung in the balance, and he would not let his enemies stand in his way. With a flick of his wrist, he drew his sword and charged into the fray.

The enemy warriors were no match for him. With each stroke of his blade, he cut them down with ruthless efficiency. Their blood sprayed across his face, but he did not falter. He was a force of nature, an unstoppable juggernaut, and nothing could stand in his path.

The ground shook with the force of his blows, and the air was thick with the stench of death. But Kellhus did not waver. He was a man with a mission, a man who would not be denied.

In the end, he emerged victorious. The enemy lay dead at his feet, and the fate of the world was secure once again. Kellhus stood alone amidst the carnage, his sword still held aloft, a symbol of his triumph. He had done what he came to do, and nothing would ever be the same again

I am now convinced that those peopel were baiting faggots or insane buck-broken fanboys like anons who say that Bakker has lead them to accepting gnosticism.

What I found instead is Wolfe just taking the piss, fucking around with funny character concepts and playing with words, which is all a fun experience, but so far the whole thing really becomes enjoyable only if you stop taking it seriously.

Look, all the good ideas and in depth worldbuilding in the world can't save something from being badly written. It's in the execution, isn't it? And Bakker is just a fucking terrible writer, who indulges himself endlessly. Sure, he can write a good battle scene here or there, but what about everything else? There's a reason why Bakkerfags always post the same handful of well written scenes >>21842684 because everything else is tiresome pseudointellectual gibberish and repetitive melodrama. There's this constant breathless quality to Bakker's narration, like every moment has to be more powerful and profound and revelatory than the last, but of course after the thousandth earth-shattering emotional revelation the thousandth fucking character goes through it all just feels impossibly naff.

These are the parts they don't post, and the fact is every single chapter is like this:

>Awe is the heart aimed at all horizons. Awe is how we belong to what beggars our conception. Awe redeems the vacancy of our imperium, lets us hope and hate as our fathers had hoped and hated, to strive for what the honest heart can comprehend. Awe dares souls to swell beyond the horizon, to shrug away the demented iterations, to believe in what cannot be seen. It calls on us to be what we were and what we remain: Men who can kill for the tale’s sake. So we might dwell in the husk of ancient certainty unto the end of our bloodless days. So we might tremble at beauty, numb to truth.

The problem with Bakkers stuff, and why hes so popular in his little niche, is that there isn't really much else like him. He obviously takes ideas from a load of different sources, but you can't really find similar stories. Plenty of people write like or better than him, but most of those aren't fantasy, and those who are don't tell the same kind of stories.

Something similar is supposedly Malazan, which has more straightforward prose with less subtext to slow you down.

This basically applies to every well regarded fantasy book.

Sounds fairly basic compared to the real thing.
>So clear, this place. Arrows hissed by him. He picked one from the air and studied it. Warm, as though it had been pressed against skin. Then his sword was in his hand, and it glittered through the space around him, seizing it like the branches of a tree. They came—a dark rush—and he was there before them, poised in the one moment they could not foresee. A calligraphy of cries. The thud of astonished flesh. He speared the ecstasy from their inhuman faces, stepped among them and snuffed out their beating hearts.

>They could not see that circumstance was holy. They only hungered. He, on the other hand, was one of the Conditioned, Dûnyain, and all events yielded to him.

>They fell back, and the howling subsided. They thronged for a moment around him—narrow shoulders and dog-shaped chests, stinking leather and necklaces of human teeth. He stood patient before their menace. Tranquil.

>They fled.

It doesn't. Tolkien, Howard, and the more famous modern authors like Martin all have dozens of imitators. Bakker isn't successful enough for that, so you basically have one really good story, but then nothing else in a similar style. Biblical/epically-styled prose, then philosophical dark fantasy is very niche.

If someone can't get into Tolkien or Howard or whoever, you can recommend several similar kinds of stories. I can't think of any similar stories to the Second Apocalypse. Nobody else has really bothered to write anything like it.

Partly its the pov. Kellhus is so above the enemies hes fighting that Bakker doesn't bother to describe the actual mechanics of the fight. Kellhus' mind is already moving past that; hes basically moving on autopilot.

When its more regular characters it becomes a bit more normal:
>“The God!” Saubon roared as he barrelled into the pursuing Coyauri. “The God wills it!” His black crashed against the mount of the heathen before him. The smaller charger stumbled, and Saubon punched his swordpoint clear through its astonished rider’s neck. He wheeled and parried a heavy blow from a Kianene garbed in flowing crimson. His black stumbled sideways and screamed, throwing him thigh to thigh with the man—though Saubon towered higher. Saubon smashed down with his pommel and the man tumbled backward from his saddle, his face bloody ruin. From somewhere, a blade nicked Saubon’s helm. He slashed the now riderless charger’s hindquarters and it went dancing into the heathen dogs before him, then he swept his broadsword in a great backward arc, shearing off the jaw of his assailant’s mount. The horse reared; its rider went down. Saubon reined his black to the left and trampled the shrieking blasphemer.

>“The God!” he cried, hacking at another man, cracking the wood of his shield.

>“Wills!” His second blow shattered the warding arm beneath.
>
“It!” The third cracked his silvered helm, halved his dark face.

>The Coyauri beyond the slumping man hesitated. Those behind Saubon, however, did not. A lance scraped along his back, snagged his hauberk, almost throwing him from his saddle. Standing in his stirrups, he hacked again, snapping the lance. When his opponent reached back for his curved blade, Saubon plunged his sword into the joints of the man’s harness. Another down. The heathen milled around him, bewildered.
Still very purple, but less abstracted than Kellhus the autistic supercomputer.

western fantasy authors forgot what fantasy is about, they write fantasy where male characters seek nothing but love interests. Fantasy (and scifi) has turned into romance and drama.

More specifically, MC's friend who is going to become kings gets married to a cute virgin girl, but she gets stolen from him before he can fuck her and she gets sent to another kingdom. The friend gets thrown in the cuck dungeon and she goes off and gets married to the king there and fucks him a lot and he impregnates her. She gets back with MC's friend at the end and he feels inadequate because she's sexually experienced now and he' still a virgin, but he gets over it and decides to raise her baby as his own son and so he can inherit the crown too. Also there's a whole secondary plotline about all the women in the city having to become prostitutes and how cucked their husbands feel. Various other things too. If the only thing you care about is MC getting cucked, the rest of the shit will scare you and make you think he will get cucked too, but he doesn't somehow. But cuckoldry everywhere else.

He doesn't find out that the mechanic works like this until later, so he doesn't try to preserve his life very much.
