>creates a character that speaks entirely in archaic Anglo-Saxon style verse
>but it's entirely dialogue without being laid out as verse
>Essentially fitting poetry to prose without losing the poetic form at all
Why does nobody talk about this more?

Well, ok that was a bit odd but necessary for the plot to advance, let's see what the next chapter has in store

Tom Bombadil and Goldberry. If you pay attention to what they say you quickly realise they're talking in some weird lyrical form, but it's entirely subsumed within the prose of the story. In actuality, it's Tolkien showing off by doing away with that silly podic metre and writing pure stressed rhythm, in the proper English old Anglo-Saxon style.

Now, my little fellows, | where be you a-going to,
puffing like a bellows? | What's the matter here then?
Do you know who I am? | I'm Tom Bombadil.
Tell me what's your trouble! | Tom's in a hurry now.
Don't you crush my lilies!

Here's my pretty lady! | Here's my Goldberry
clothed all in silver-green | with flowers in her girdle!
Is the table laden? | I see yellow cream and honeycomb,
and white bread, and butter; | milk, cheese, and green herbs
and ripe berries gathered. | Is that enough for us?
Is the supper ready?

It's masterfully hidden as some strange lilting dialogue but once you realise what he's doing you're blown away by what he's doing.

Where now the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing?
Where is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing?
Where is the hand on the harpstring, and the red fire glowing?
Where is the spring and the harvest and the tall corn growing?
They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow;
The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow.
Who shall gather the smoke of the dead wood burning,
Or behold the flowing years from the Sea returning?

I love Tolkien's poetry. There's something so mournful about it I can't help but be affected.
