Hi, I'm Jap.
In Japan, there are not many introductory books and commentaries on Hegel due to the Marxist domination of the publishing industry until recently, so I'm going to buy Kojève's Introduction to the Reading of Hegel.
Is this book actually easy to understand?
My knowledge of Hegel is such that I read commentary on Hegel in books on the history of philosophy and can barely understand it and feel like I understand it.
This book has been out of print for over 20 years and secondhand books are very expensive, so I don't want to make the mistake of shopping.

Quit wasting your time on Hegel. Either go back to Kant or study Bataille. Heidegger is ok too.

>> No.21800706

kojeves book is not an intro to Hegel despite the name of the text, it’s his very specific interpretation of Hegel. You are reading kojeve more than you are Hegel. Even hyppolite’s book on the phenomenology functions better as an overall intro, even if it veers towards a French postmodern kind of reading. But there are also other intros that are better overall, I don’t know about in Japanese though.

Can't really help you with understanding Hegel, there are two playlists on youtube going over his two primary works
Science of Logic: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBAqLRlJe9p4sSXYnSVZUyVFeRFDFB4RR (about 14 hours total)
Phenomenology of Spirit: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4gvlOxpKKIgR4OyOt31isknkVH2Kweq2 (about 180 hours total)
Out of curiosity, do you plan on using an english or japanese translation?

It doesn't matter.
It was originally motivated by Bataille and Lacan.

You do realize all Marxists are Hegelians right?

Maybe he wants a non-retarded version of Hegelianism

>> No.21800821

Kojeve is good. So is Hyppolite. But not the true Hegel per se. I would suggest Hegel's Ladder by Harris. Pinkard has a good bio. Have you read PoS and SoL? Worth reading the primaries too

PS: do you like Nishida and Nishitani? Interesting Hegel responses at least the former's Basho logic

It's worth noting Kojeve is a Heideggerian Marxist so may be retarded too according to many (in addition to a soviet disinfo agent)

The best introduction to Hegel is Hegel: A Reinterpretation, by Walter Kaufmann, translator of Nietzsche.

I'm currently trying to learn Hegel and one book that's changed how I approach his work is "Hegel and the Hermetic Tradition". I had this idea that Hegel was an atheistic philosopher (from Zizek, Bernstein, McGowan, others), but this book argues persuasively that he was actually a very religious thinker, in the tradition of some of the great religious reformers. It's definitely eye opening in how radically different my reading of Hegel has been once I've read that book.
