People use "literary" to mean high culture writing, like Shakespeare rather than low culture like Tolkien. Tolkien himself denied to label his work as "literature," as the kind of writings literary critics praised.

I'd agree that manga isn't really /lit/ but I still read a ton of it, maybe try one of the light novels related to a manga series you like if it has one, if you're really looking for manga that has a literary element I think drama and mystery types are the closest it gets

I see people respond to these often with pun pun or monster (which has a light novel alongside the manga) and those two artists have a few works that are in the realm of non~shonen shit you might like

Tough question. Lot of manga suffer from being stretched thin and cut short due to the needs of the magazine they are being published in. Not to mention that most of the stuff we get is one aimed at teenage populace, so the quality of writing is like YA novels.
Of the ones I read I guess I could count
Don't Say Mystery by Tamura Yumi
Mystery Minzoku Gakusha Yakumo Itsuki by Kanari Youzaburou
Various titles that are adapted from novels by Kyougoku Natsuhiko
Munakata by Hoshino Yukinobu
Memories of Emanon by Kajio Shinji and Tsuruta Kenji

The problem is when you drag this shit into a literature discussion. This is why people dislike weeaboos. Dude "sequential art" is just an abomination born from the idea that kids enjoy books with pictures in them, so if you stuff as many pictures as possible on every page you'll get maximum enjoyment. Comics plain don't work as a medium, read any fucking manga and 50% of it is just heads with their mouths open. Comics are not a real medium, they're just very very badly illustrated books.

They do work as a medium. They have their own language, their own grammar, their own form, their own authors, their own masterpieces, their own canon. You mistake the meaning of art (artistic medium) with the meaning of Art (an artistic work considered to be of the highest quality). All comics are art but not all comics are Art.

>> No.21756994

Please tell me in what way a comic is superior to a sparsely illustrated book. In a comic you actually give up prose to have shitty images of inane shit that doesn't matter because the key scenes that are worth illustrating end up in a nice big spread which is basically equivalent to what you'd see in an illustrated book. I will absolutely argue that illustrations may contribute a whole lot to books, and I'm open to this debate, but comics are an abomination. I"ve thought long and hard about this.

What the fuck is a MAL, retard. I have read all the great masterpieces that weebs recommend all the time. Manga is for children and the comics medium is stunted. Berserk is made by an edgy 14 year old, it's literally the same as reading Batman. Majority of this shit is completely uninteresting and you people latch on it and imbue it with value because there's a cute waifu. Main character is either a blank slate for a salaryman to self-insert into or some kind of comical edgelord. One Punch Man tries to make fun of it all like Dragon Ball but it fails because you people can't stop taking all of this seriously. Then you have the gall to look down on people who watch Marvel movies. Get some self-awareness and grow the fuck up.
The medium fails at a basic level, not even a genius can make something valuable from comics.

The word "Literature" is just a human definition, it's subjective, it's definition are:
1- written works, especially those considered of superior or lasting artistic merit.
2- books and writings published on a particular subject.

And manga fits both.

Definition of "written":
1- mark (letters, words, or other symbols) on a surface, typically paper, with a pen, pencil, or similar implement.
2- compose, write, and send (a letter) to someone.

Of course we are talking about the first one, and manga fits it. So yes, manga is written.

Btw you should be aware of the fact that the Japanese government sees manga readership as a problem. That's because thanks to manga, the youth are failing to develop actual proficiency in the Japanese language because the dialogue and choce of words are always toddler tier. Otaku often can't read Japanese publications without furigana which are pronunciation aids above the kanji, normally used for children. This is your medium lol. >The techno-pope is firing his lazers!
Fucking high culture right there. The drawings are pretty and if you don't have an imagination I guess it's nicer to have an artist do the work for you. But I'm sorry, comics are a stunted medium for stunted people. I could even argue that books shouldn't have illustrations because illustrations impose the artist's vision of a scene over yours, instead of allowing you to develop your own.
Now make of this what you will. I've said what I had to say.

That’s like expecting someone to get good at dancing by watching movies. Manga is not literature. It’s a different medium, so it’s silly to treat it as if you’re reading literature in the first place. It’s not manga’s fault. It’s the fact these people do not read literature (and probably were not adequately educated to do so).

Stop projecting you diarrhea-coloured nigger. See this is your problem you keep thinking manga equals highschools and big tits proving time and time again your ignorance of the medium. Do you know such cliches became popular during the 2000s? Which shows you are only familiar with manga made after the 90s, proving once more how ignorant you are towards the medium you are cinically dismissing.
