I am looking for a short story which I read around 20 years ago so it might be way older.
An invisible organism that lives off the life-energy released when other beings die contemplates how it willingly expanded too fast and too far. It engulfs the whole galaxy now, after starting out on a small swamp planet, but it expanded too far into regions where there is no lofe and is now suffering hunger because of that and it feels like it will die soon.
It's just a couple of pages, describing how it came to this.
Does anyone know which story this is? Google didn't help me and always wanted to lead me to Asimov's The Gods Themselves.

Appearance is an extremely important part of how people interact with each other and it makes the world that is being built seem childish and inhuman if that factor is ignored.

This was my first Banks book and I dig the way this guy writes. When the prose needs to be purple, that shit is turned purple. Descriptions paint an accurate picture; I'm rarely left guessing or wondering what something is or what something appears as.

This story is about some future humanity living in what is essentially a gigantic megastructure on Earth, with rooms several kilometres high and tall. One room has an active volcano system; another has the 'capital' city shaped like a gargantuan chandelier hanging off of the ceiling. There is an underlying computer-like system that encompasses the entire planet and allows for humans to live eight lives apiece, although this particular anecdote doesn't feature heavily into the story. The story itself revolves around an extinction event coming to end life and the subsequent efforts of a handful of unknowning persons in an attempt to stop the Encroachment.

The characters are varied, ranging from an ex-count who wonders the desolate 'Crypt' (the world computer thing), a self-proclaimed Asura, and others. The one who grew on me the most was Bascule, who cannot spell so his chapters are him 'writing' phonetically. I'll include a paragraph out of one of his chapters at the end of this post. The chapters featuring Asura may have been my favorite content wise because its scenes are evocative and it learns how to be 'human'/interact with humans as it goes along from spawning into being to what it ultimately becomes.

Before I read this, I saw that it was a big inspiration for BLAME! and I can see that now that I'm finished. This book was essentially the driving force for the manga. Is there a genre title for "random niggas complete solo quests that culminate into some mega saving the world quest at the end?"

It's a very common problem I'm noticing that everybody EXCEPT the protagonist will be described pretty thoroughly. Like, even in Cradle, a series I like, Lindon isn't described too much beyond "huge" and "looks like he wants to punch you". Eye colour isn't really brought up until it changes because of magic bullshit. Hair colour you can infer is black because everybody else's hair is black except for Eithan's, but it's still weird.
And then there's Bastion, where I'm pretty sure Scorio is never described at all beyond "is male".

Coward. When I want monster girls, I want Monster Girls, humanoidal and fuckable but inhuman. Anything else is just perverted cosplay.

On a serious topic, am I the only person that due to reading a lot of sci-fi and fantasy got somewhat braindwashed to always consider a Monster Girl an accptable partner option? Like, I know if the biology is incompatible it's a bust, but if it generally is, i.e. Wolf-girl, Dragonborn, Succubus etc., then it feels somewhat inappropriate to me to say they are unlovable just because they look inhuman. It's not a visual preference, it's simply FEELS bigoted to consider them worse.

Hmm, it's a bit of a problem as women are just attracted to power, size and strength, meanwhile men like humanoidal shapes more. A big monster man is just female ideal partner on streoids, for men it'd be something like beautiful elf.

However, there's one author that does great monster romances between male humans and female Monster Girls, Snekguy. He's written dozens of them, all available for free iirc. Picrel.

In a way it's a very good excerpt, quite succintly expresses classical, all-time relevant young man's sentiment to put a pretty woman on a pedestal and excuse all her flaws while at the same time puting himself and her as more virtuous than others. To reach the essence of a thing is one of the goals of writing and Rothfuss nailed it here.

That you can agree or disagree with this sentiment only proves it was well-written. Only an idiot would take this at face-value, after all. It's a fictional story, not a school book, you are not supposed to take it as gospel. It's wild that it even needs to be said on a board full of people who (supposedly) read.

The problem with that in the second book is that he's either lying about everything, making the book pointless or he's accomplished so much that the bullshitting doesn't matter.

Anyone read this?

I read the first book and quite enjoyed it.
The second book starts where the first left off but I'm 50%+ through it and it is mostly padding and not much is happening. There have been a couple of minor things but nothing major, it has mainly been a bout the characters bonding and discussions between themselves.

Does it pick up because I'm thinking of dropping it.

I have nothing against female authors, on the contrary, I read a lot of them, but I hate when they just use initials instead of their name. This feels like a cheap copout, as if they didn't want to make it obvious that they're female. But at this point almost everyone does it, so it seems like a dead give away.
NTA, by the way.

There are books written by women. There are books written for women. There's an intersection of lit designed to make severe menstrual cramps and lack of powerful mind altering hormones bearable. It's like all the memes plus Robert Jordan and Dune, only it's real and it's fucked up to experience if you're a dude with a dick and balls and just wanted to read some half decent fantasy.

Okay book. I enjoyed it until he got to the magic school and all sense of inertia ground to a halt. None of the shit in school was interesting or fun and all the side characters where extremely one-note, from the bully, the main teacher, friends and love interest. Then out of pretty much fucking nowhere we have a random fight at the end with no real build up or meaning because the idiot author realized he didn't have an actual ending and just needed the story to stop at something vaguely resembling a typical climax. I kind of liked the framing device of it all being a story being told initially, but it really didn't amount to much. The prose waffled between pretty good and outright terrible purple prose trying too hard frequently. The dialogue was also trying way too hard to come off as witty banter way too frequently. Wasn't bad, but not good enough to make me want to read more either.

What the gravitational deflectors do is deflect incoming missiles by manipulating gravity in such a way that the missiles miss. I also had the idea it could fling missiles back at the aggressor.

Only issue is I can't figure out how much energy or what it would take for such a device to work.

An incorrect, and terrible mindset that is anti-individual in its essence. Views like yours ensure nothing ever changes because the people are absolved of responsibility for their fate. Oppressive regimes require complacence, and compliance to thrive. To suggest that the individual is not responsible for the state of his country runs contrary to everything the West is founded on, and it underlies the current decay of our institutions.

If I have zero idea of what a character looks like, they tend to just be... Sort of humanoid but with their heads just being their names, in my mind. It's a weird way to visualise it, but it seems to work. A character who's even mildly described I tend to get some sort of image of, though it's usually never quite robust and sometimes I just miss details (it took me a while to realise Kaladin in Stormlight has darker skin for example, and I just never really picked up on Jasnah being even darker) so things go wrong, but as long as there's something there I can usually get some idea.

No, but seriously, why don't you just go to the subreddit or even forums of the these "webnovel" and talk about it there then trying to pretend to be multiple people.

>Why doesn’t a shitposter go to a forum where people actually read a book, have an active discussion about the book and will likely see through his bullshit.
I wonder why Anon.

Pirate has mastered the art of creating compelling hooks.
The entire story is just mystery boxes inside mystery boxes, add some decent characters and someone who consciously is trying to get better with each chapter he writes and you get the formula for a story you keep coming back to.
Where are you in the story? If you can put up with discord, then TWI has an active discord "community" to discuss as you read.

Idk, not a fan of reddit or other forums.
And I'm not pretending to be multiple people, I am genuinely another person who started reading the books recently. I dislike the shill and his gay ass ritualposting as much as the next anon

Close to the end of Vol 3. Closer than I expected actually, only 2 or 3 chapters to go. At this point Erin is getting ready to celebrate christmas and Ryoka is trying to get a fairy to act like Rudolph to

I can't (won't) physically inspect a 6'3 person I see in Walmart wearing a dress and a 3 day beard, but I can infer with a high degree of certainty it wasn't born with a vagina.

Ryoka once again Mogs Erin in Interesting storylines. I remember the run way better than I do the party. Look forward to the volume end, it's one of the better ones.

Fair, but the other storylines beat both. Wistram Days, Laken, the Doctor, hell even the [Clown] chapters are fucking great.

What'd you say about the general quality of the volumes? Heard some people say that Vol 4 is the weakest, but also heard some people say the author keeps improving through the series.

I hate when long multi-work series do recaps of every single thing at the beginning of each book.
I'm reading the Wheel of time and it feels like the first 1/4th of every book is filled with reiterated explanations. Not to mention that these books even have a fucking glossary for terms at the back so there's especially no reason for it.

Here's my ranking, I could get into details but I don't want to spoil you.

It does generally get better as it goes along except for in 4 where all the memorable storylines happen outside Liscor. As a result, the volume has a lot of interesting arcs but no narrative glue to hold them all together.

It's solved in everything after 4 where each volume follows a distinct theme for the inn stories.

It also has a lot of Chandrar chapters which most people only start to find interesting after a certain important thing happens in volume 5. I always liked Chandrarian stuff, so that was never an issue for me.

I finished Fires of Heaven and am about 1/3 done with Lord of Chaos. Still having a lot of fun. The finale of FoH was insane. Action better than most movies or anime I ever experienced.

Lord of Chaos is pretty good so far, definitely slowed down but understandably so after Fires of Heaven's crazy second half. I like that we get a lot more of the Forsaken and Rand's amnesty is definitely leading to something bad.

There was a very short window of time where there were non-hentai futanari manga. Things like Bra Girl comes to mind. Boku no Tsubasa was technically one of those although it was pretty much a hentai manga. They were all pretty short though and interested in the genre faded quickly. Now it would all be tranny shit if it happened again. Sad!
