Some anon made a thread about books like The Great Beauty by Sorrentino - sharing the same sense of melancholy and beauty, and another anon recommended Antal Szerb's Journey by Moonlight. I read that and it was really fucking good, so thanks to that anon. But anyone has any other recommendations that would fit, please share.

Watched that the other day and personally I thought it was a let-down. I didn't get filtered, I got the motifs about nature and the days of Creation and the heathens and so on... but it just wasn't anywhere near as profound or beautiful as the reception it received claimed. Making everything unnecessarily tedious does not make you a Tarkovsky.

would love something that captures the feel of this, more specifically the fever dream feelings of intense isolation in a far and hostile environment, and the gradual deterioration of the body and mind as it succumbs to attrition from everything from aspects of the environment its self like the climate, flora and fauna, and hostile natives, and isolation, lack of supplies etc.

In Search of Lost Time, referenced in the film itself, shares some similarities, especially the sense of melancholy and... lost time.
Steppenwolf's main character, at the beginning, also reminds me a lot of Jep Gambardella, however, I'd say he ends up in a very different place at the end.

The Picture of Dorian Gray has those elements too, certainly musings on beauty, morality of beauty, juxtaposing overwhelming beauty and overbearing ugliness etc. There are also the lavish parties and sharp-witted conversations of the upper classes, and the dullness of such life. In fact, I've always felt that if anyone should ever adapt The Picture of Dorian Gray well it should be in a similar style to The Great Beauty, with a sort of meandering flair, and highly aesthetic sensibility.
