If I'm a 23 pseud who wants to write fiction but hasn't really read many classics (besides Faust, Dostoevsky's novels, some realists and romantics, Homer in high school) and generally doesn't read much (STEMcel), would it be better to spend 3.5 hours daily reading or just writing? I plan on sticking to it at least for a year and then reconsider. I'm serious. The other option is learning to play piano or killing myself.

Spend a few hours every day reading for a year. Write a little every day to stretch your legs I guess.

Set yourself the discipline of reading a book a week, 52 books a year. It sounds hard but its not once you get into the swing of it and ditch useless distractions like social media etc.
Work your way through a solid chunk of the classics range just so you know what quality writing looks like. Try reading different genres and forms (short stories, plays, essays) so you're broadly well read.
Start writing but accept that the first thing you write will be shit. Write it anyway, submit it and collect the inevitable rejections. Go back to the drawing board and start again.
Write something better this time, submit it and see how it goes.
Rinse and repeat until you achieve success or die, whichever comes first.

Force yourself to write extremely simple 2 page long stories to condition yourself to write stories and begin to understand beginning and end.
Write 3 to 5 pages a day off the cuff of just whatever you feel like before you go to bed to improve your ability. Start in the middle of scenes without any explanation. Dont name characters if it helps.

Its what happened to me.

Reading and writing is like eating and shitting. In order to write something you need to eat first. Then just keep repeating the procedure until the some good shit comes out.

What was your education/experience with literature like before you decided to do this?

>> No.21737285

Just do both, dude. Give yourself 2 hours to read and 2 hours to write. Set your goal to finish a book by the time you’re 25, no matter how good or bad it turns out. Simple.

This is sincerely what I wish I did at your age. I had this weird complex where I felt like I could write unless I was really well-versed in good writing and that was retarded.

I have barely a high school education but i've always been a big reader so perhaps it came fairly easily to me.
Originally when i was young i wanted to make it in music and applied similar discipline but had to accept that i just don't have the talent.
