NLH is really not a very good book, but you have to admit that Dazai was interesting. A lot of Japanese literature is about feelings of loneliness and alienation. The man was exactly that embodied. That’s what drives so much of the intrigue. There’s something sort of darkly romantic about the man, his life, and his death.

Not anyone here but I wanted to get married. It's just the culture. The times say you have to have fun and have one night stands with strangers as frequently as possible until you're finally tired and you feel nothing because more sex more good. If you want a committed relationship you're screwed unless you live in some hyper-traditional environment. I think this has made a lot of people who genuinely wanted companionship bitter. You're basically told that you should seek something you don't really want and only once you're in your 30s and you have a career going then you should consider getting with one of the girls who are now getting railed by strangers every night. I think if people can't see something sick in what's going on right now they are true enemies of mankind.
