When Beckett died Irish literature basically died with him with only Heaney keeping speed but as a poet instead of an all-rounder. (not to discredit Heaney of course he was a much better poet than Beckett) Since then there has not been a single writer from Ireland or indeed the world that managed to do what Beckett did in any direction nor has there been an attempt to. Beckett didn't just write stories or plays for the purpose of conveying a philosophy or story like the vast majority of writers do, especially today, but he also used the medium itself to attack the capabilities of language and even the human senses. Joyce did the opposite with Finnegan's Wake. The work itself and how it was written was trying to convey something and not just the "plot" and what have you. Modern writers on a whole have collapsed and no longer attempt such experiements and put everything into "Character development", "plot devices" etc.
If Watt was written today it would be the most interesting novel written in about 50 years and would be the most impressive work of prose for nearly the exact same same time, maybe even further. Nobody tries to write a book like Watt today and most writers aren't capable of it.

Because in this instance we’re talking about Beckett’s entire body of work, not just one piece of it. He had the most singular and awe-inspiring vision, you can’t mistake his texts as being written by anyone else. When you talk about the visionary qualities of the artist, few authors are able to maintain them across even a single book, let alone a lifetime of work. Yet Beckett was committed to an aesthetic praxis that was unlike any other, and you can see this throughout his career.

He WAS different. Oulipo interested him, as did surrealism, but you have to appreciate that Beckett was writing throughout the entire 20th century. you can’t just compare him to a couple of short-lived movements when he outlived them all and continued to write long after interest in them wained. Beckett is quite literally the last high modernist, the man was writing from the early 20th century well into the 80s. There isn’t a single comparable author from that century who has had such a prolific career, and one so marked by his own style and approach to writing.

I’m OP and I’m pretty sure my Beckett effortposting over I don’t know how many years is part of the reason this board actually remembers who he is. Discussion was almost non-existent prior to that, so I’m not bothered if my idolatry is cringe because it’s actually incentivised discussion.

One could argue that beside his plays, interest in Beckett's work took a nose dive after How it is. Oulipo and Surrealists also kept producing despite the fad passing. Texts for nothing and his last trilogy is incredibly obscure for a writer of Beckett's fame.

Yes, because Beckett is one of those rare authors whose body of work is greater than the sum of its parts. Each text is in constant conversation with every other text, refracting and being refracted by the ideas that animate his work. People who just read one text like waiting for godot and assume he’s making a simplistic analogy for our modern alienation from God are missing out on so much of what makes him great.

You’re right that interest in his later works wained by comparison to that of his plays and major novels, but it’s still a huge achievement that he stayed so committed to his vision of a literature that exhausts every possibility to find those hard, rare things that can only be said when there is nothing left to be said. That his audience became exhausted with his work is of little surprise to me when exhaustion is such a key component of his work.
