The truth is, anyone who knows more than one language has a deep hatred for his own kind.

I don't really consume anything in my native tongue. Neither do I write, converse or think in it regularly. I will accept being a disgrace, there's little pride in association with my nationality. I will treat my language like a dead one, an obscure knowledge that allows to read classics in original form. It is spiritually dead anyways, even if it's swine variety is still spoken.

Unlike Tamil, Ancient Telugu literature is lost to history which is weird considering this was a major buddhist region. Probably brahmins destroyed it.
Kalapurnodayam by pingali suranna is considered the finest premodern Telugu work. The dude writes weird surreal meta shit.
80% of Telugu language is basically Sanskrit because a certain brahmin dialect from coastal andhra became the base for standard Telugu and they didn't even bother translating modern concepts to Telugu. They considered Telugu to be a vulgar language that needs to be purified by Sanskrit.
There were a couple of prominent marxist writers in the 20th century. One of them wrote a book shitting on ramayana from a marxist feminist lens(I think the book's name was ramayana vishavruksham). Mahaprastanam penned by a communist is when poetry peaked.
There's nothing much to say about the literary history of Telugu unlike Tamil or Bengali.

I'm an English native but it was a bit hard to accept that English translations of world literature have the most rigorous scholarship. I thought maybe I could learn a Romance language to read both its native literature and translations making use of Romance grammar as I think English is boring. I learned Japanese and that has so much more variation in what the written language can do it makes English seem quite simple in comparison.

English translations are better 99% of the time. Translators in my language have to be actual great authors to succeed due to the immense differences to mainstream languages, and guess what: they aren't, they are mere tradesmen going through the motions. They could never write a great book. They have to be insensitive like butchers.

The funniest thing is when pseuds read these shitty translations and start to think that this butchered, soulless text must represent the gold standard of writing just by virtue of its association with the original author, who is considered a classic. Then the cycle of futility starts all over again. I really detest these dorks with no sense of quality trying to play at being literary aesthetes on basis of texts that read like welfare applications. They even read indirect translations with no sense of shame, the swine. So with all this in mind, there's no reason to not read in English, where quality and style still have at least a semblance of meaning.

OP was concerned with whether I read texts in my mother tongue or no. A lot of what I read is from other countries all over the world, hence translations. And the English translation wins almost always. I am too much of a midwit to study any other languages up to a level where I would feel comfortable engaging with literature, so there you go.

There are only a few read worthy books in my native tongue. The rest of published books are someone's travelogue, critique or extension/derivative of Marxist thought. Exceptions are literary masturbation by university professors/academics.
