I've actually encountered a grand total of two which were impressively well written. I wonder sometimes how many actual authors write fanfiction on the side but will never admit it.

I uploaded the first draft of my novel on A03 a few years ago and it ended up getting 55 kudos and 14 comments. Probably one of my life's greatest achievements.

At one point I was trawling through all the Stop!! Hibari-kun! fanfics on there and ff.net (because Stop!! Hibari-kun! is based). I read all the non-crossover ones, and had started watching Ranma because there were a few very interest-looking long-form Ranma crossovers, but I ended up getting distracted from it and never getting back to it.

I've read and enjoyed some original fiction on AO3 but I typically find it through off-site links. Not sure how much of an audience it provides for free but it's a good host.
