i don't think the cantos are that good. i do like his poem The Study In Aesthetics, but his poetry generally doesn't strike me as significant.
What was significant in him, I felt, was his ability to identify and bind together geniuses. He seemed more a social artist, a sort of touchstone detective rather than one who held any particular thread of his own. I am willing to be admonished for my lack of taste, but I just can't seem to penetrate his greater works. Perhaps I need to be a polyglot, lord of reference, before I can delight in him, and perhaps he is a poet's poet, but there's something to be said of approachability. Even Joyce's Ulysses is fairly easy to penetrate with some patience, and there is much to love even as a layman. Where is the allure of Pound? Why must he suck the pleasure from writing and transform it into some act of penance, like Flaubert?
