Oh hey I’m watching that movie with my mom right now lmao
Feel shitty watching it now that I’m a 23yo guy and probably staying single for the rest of my life, but it’s very good

Pride & Prejudice is stellar. Janus himself couldn't do better.

Yes, thank Mammon for apple watches.
>Fiction, I think, or idle falsity of any kind, was never tolerable, except in a world which did itself abound in practical lies and solemn shams; and which had gradually impressed on its inhabitants the inane form of character tolerant of that kind of ware. A serious soul, can it wish, even in hours of relaxation, that you should fiddle empty nonsense to it ? A serious soul would desire to be entertained, either with absolute silence, or with what was truth, and had fruit in it, and was made by the Maker of us all. With the idle soul I can fancy it far otherwise; but only with the idle.

I try not to think of romantic fiction as "cringe" because even the idea of "cringe" is incompatible with romanticism's MO, and I think all lit should be taken on its own terms. That said, I love Wuthering Heights, Frankenstein, Romeo and Juliet, Sorrows of Young Werter, and The Scarlet Letter, if you want a full scale of what cringe/romantic means. For bonus points throw in The Blithedale Romance, which is kind of romantic satire. I'd also include Moby Dick, though it's so perfect in every way that aligning it with any movement feels somehow inherently reductive.

I see what you did there

Romance is inherently cringe as it's always going to have an aspect of wish fullfillment
womens romance relies on wish that billionaire criminal gigaChad falls in love with plain Becky
mens romance relies on idea that women can feel love

Try reading Beowulf and see if it doesn't have an impact on your pea brain. Fiction stimulates and improves the imagination and ideas.
