is it good?
what horror books have lived up to the hype/acclaim?

Haven't read that. Sorry, op. I will say that The Exorcist lived up to the hype. Rare case of the book and film both being exceptional.

The end of the book was lame, how it glossed over what happened and left it a mystery. If you think it's on par with the movie, you are wrong.

If you know who Straub is ripping off it’s less impressive.

wasn't this heavily influenced by salems lot?
i'm not into king anymore but i want a good, straight to the point supernatural book

The book does a better job of avoiding answering if what is happening with Regan is genuinely supernatural or a mental illness. The movie has no mystery to what is happening. If you don't think both are on par with each other, you are wrong

I liked how the book kept the possession/mental illness question going till the very end. The movie just decided early on.

The creepiest parts of both was hearing/reading about the shit Regan (it's assumed) got up to behind the scenes.

Yeah the movie plot works for the movie, the book plot works for the book. You have to keep the mystery going longer in the book, whereas admitting it's demonic possession means the SFX team has something to do.

I think I like the book more, though I haven't read it in a long while. I remember really liking Blatty's writing style

The Last Days of Jack Sparks is a solid little horror book that moves right along from the first page. Come Closer by Sara Gran is potent, disturbing. Grady Hendrix, We Sold Our Souls was a good read.

I quite enjoyed Buehlman's The Suicide Motor Club and (not quite as much) The Lesser Dead.

thanks anon, will check these out.

is ghost story worth it though? It's been on my mind the past few weeks but I don't want to spend money on something that I won't like

I started to read it years ago. Was looking forward to it, but it found it quite dull; contrived and stilted. I think got about 100 pages in. Just not my cup of tea, but it has its fans, so who knows.

I really enjoyed Picrel, the series was good too and quite different so you can see one after the other.

loved this one. so far the only book to ever scare me enough to sleep with the lights on

I think it is. Much better written a lot of the King stuff, and I enjoy King. It’s really about stories and how we use them, yadda, yadda, yadda. At times it is like a lot of the generic horror stuff from the time but really it’s a solid book with a lot of great ideas. Straub said he wanted to really explore the idea of the ghost story and the influence upon it from the old old guys is really there.
