Kek no he hated it because Herbert was an Atheist and he diminished the role of religion and mythology in them.

maybe, it's very different from the first book

>> No.21470758

About halfway through and I like it a lot.
Can't quite see why people would praise it so highly above the other books (which are all great in my view) though but knowing Herbert the crazy shit won't happen this early in the book.
Also I will admit I had a brief while where I had trouble caring/associating with any of the new characters, because of the massive time leap and of the notion that none of this really matters and it's all just part of the millennia long grand plan, which won't come to it's conclusion for another couple of centuries.

Dune is good SciFi, but Tolkien is a much better writer, at least when comparing Dune and LotR.

>> No.21470891

>>21470809
Nah. Not if you are talking pace and plot. Maybe prose but that is subjective. Lotr has too many retarded world building asides where things are directly explained rather than shown or hinted. The 4 page pipe weed aside in two towers was hysterically unforgivable.

is it better than the first book? because I could not get into the first book at all. I even watched the movie (the david lynch one) and I still thought it pretty boring.

Dune is plagiarism
Sabres of Paradise
>"To kill with the point lacked artistry."
Dune
>Gurney says there's no artistry in killing with the tip, that it should be done with the edge
Sabres of paradise
>Thus, in writing of Shamyl, we must place him first in his time − the first half of the nineteenth century, and then in his place − the mountains – […]
Dune
>To begin your study of the life of Muad'Dib, then, take care that you first place him in his time: born in the 57th year of the Padishah Emperor, Shaddam IV. And take the most special care that you locate Muad'Dib in his place: the planet Arrakis
Sabres of Paradise
>Shamyl, the embodiment of his land, was at once warrior and mystic, ogre and saint, foxy and innocent, chivalrous and ruthless.
Dune
>He was warrior and mystic, ogre and saint, the fox and the innocent, chivalrous, ruthless, less than a god, more than a man. There is no measuring Muad'Dib's motives by ordinary standards.
Sabres of Paradise
>O mountains of Gounib, O soldiers of Shamyl,
>Shamyl’s citadel was full of warriors,
>Yet it has fallen, fallen forever …
Dune
>O Seas of Caladan,
>O people of Duke Leto--
>Citadel of Leto fallen,
>Fallen forever. . .

If you thought the basic bitch first book too "difficult" there is no way in seven hells you understand God Emperor, let alone Heretics or Chapterhouse, the best two in the series.

It doesn't end on a "cliffhanger". There was a planned sequel though. Duncan and Sheena leave on the No-ship into the scattering. Dianel and Marty are Independent Face Dancers that parallel the Kwistach Haderach.

I liked both of them too ; they are heavier and more challenging than the rest; as a kid , those last 2 books were the ones I could least comprehend ; God Emperor is very straightforward as we get Leto POV and can see the Machinations inside out.

That message that he leafs in that place,
that were for that character
is my favourite moment
of all the series.

What the Experience of the last 2 books will be able to evoke from you depends on your own comprehension of Sociology/Hermeticism/Psychology/Philosophy/Theology/History you are.

I finished the series 6 months ago but still think about the unwritten book 7, I'm not touching the brian herbert stuff but the temptation is there. Although the david lynch film had problems, I wish we had gotten all 6 of the books adapted.

What other books are like Dune? I've read Tolkien completely.
I like the way that the dune universe feels real and how effortlessly it places the characters in place each time skip.

Well, Villenueve has mentioned wanting to adapt Dune Messiah in a few years, to tell the story of Paul. Probably won't do the rest of them.

This gets worse every book from 3 to 6.

>Chapterhouse one of the best in the series
What the fuck man. I don't understand how you can walk away from the series thinking that. For me the peak was book 1 and each one got successively worse as once-beloved Duncan Idaho became an inescapable weight on the story. Oh he's so good at fucking women, oh he's the best at everything, oh he's incredible, the story that was once about a planet now all but revolves around this supercool radguy. Btw here's Chapterhouse which starts off as the worst book in the series but then right when it gets really good the characters you actually like die. Here's a 3 page sequence of Miles Teg which is actually pretty cool and somewhat refreshing after DUNCANDUNCANDUNCAN.

The last 3 books shouldn't have been written. Maybe the 4th just because of its significance, but the grand message of it all is just so weakened by the end. I started off loving Dune and each successive book I read lowered my enjoyment of the prior ones until I was actually happy it was over by the time I finished. What a slog.

I see now that "Seven Hells" is from GOT and not Dune, as I had conflated the two. I walk into the desert now.
