Thank you all for participating in the PotD threads throughout last year. There are several things I'll share in this thread.

Firstly, pic related is a selection of great 100 poems along with their PotM archived threads. Roll for a poem!

Next, this is a ranking for best poets as voted by /lit/. This vote ran for a week, and each voter was allowed 5 nominations. It required a Google account to prevent spam, but it was anonymous.

Lastly, there's s a 444-pages PDF that you can download from https://files.catbox.moe/bppi3z.pdf or from Libgen/Z-library (in the upload queue at the moment). It contains all the poems posted and links to the Warosu archive if you want to read the relevant discussions.

I also updated the /lit/ wiki to add the materials mentioned: https://4chanlit.fandom.com/wiki/Poem_of_the_Day

Thank you for your participation and support! I hope these will help /lit/ users who want to get into poetry.

Have a great 2023!

I already said so in my vote submission, but thankyou for your work on these. How did you choose the poems? Did you pick them out as you went, or all up front? As well as having a chance to appreciate many good ones I already loved, I discovered one of my best poems of the year in one of your threads, something by Vernon Scannell about dancing under the sword of damocles, sorry I can't remember the title or post the image, it's saved on my other machine.
Surprised that rossetti (whom I voted for) made the top ten. Accidentally left Ernest Dowson off of my voting slip, surely he woulda made the top spot if I'd remembered.
roll.

I roll on my own.

I value little those much vaunted rights
that have for some the lure of dizzy heights;
I do not fret because the gods refuse
to let me wrangle over revenues,
or thwart the wars of kings; and 'tis to me
of no concern whether the press be free
to dupe poor oafs or whether censors cramp
the current fancies of some scribbling scamp.
These things are words, words, words. My spirit fights
for deeper Liberty, for better rights.
Whom shall we serve—the people or the State?
The poet does not care—so let them wait.
To give account to none, to be one's own
vassal and lord, to please oneself alone,
to bend neither one's neck, nor inner schemes,
nor conscience to obtain something that seems
power but is a flunkey's coat; to stroll
in one's own wake, admiring the divine
beauties of Nature and to feel one's soul
melt in the glow of man's inspired design
—that is the blessing, those are the rights!

Thanks anon. I picked one every day based on any number of factors: feedback from you, recent poems I had posted, something I've read recently, a special occasion, etc. Sometimes I'd just pick a postmodernist poem because I'd know I won't be home throughout the day to bump the thread, and these poems would attract more discussion.

The poem you mentioned is Song by Vernon Scannel by the way, and there were only 16 voters / ~75 nominations, so 5th place is all the poets who got 2 votes. Surprised Blake didn't make it.

Well, god bless you for your effortposting (god bless all effortposters, it's a thankless task). You picked a good overview of lyric poetry. So will you be continuing in the new year? Your phrasing on the wiki suggests not, and yet I already see a thread for today, so either you're being aped or i take it you intend to continue. More Walter de la Mare this year pls thx.

>Fire and Ice
>By Robert Frost

>Some say the world will end in fire,
>Some say in ice.
Atypical beginning, draws in attention at the expense of beauty.
>From what I’ve tasted of desire
>I hold with those who favor fire.
Ok there's little literary beauty here, and it's more of a philosophical quip.
>But if it had to perish twice,
>I think I know enough of hate
Continues the idea
>To say that for destruction ice
>Is also great
>And would suffice.
Bit of a quirky ending with "would suffice".

Overall, it's obviously a classic, but, like Frost's most poems, they don't have that much beauty. With respect to the idea, it's a bit hard to really make something out of it. Are hate and desire really antithetical? Some say Nazis were driven by hate for others others say Nazis were driven by love for their country. Communists were driven by hate for the bourgeoisie or love for the commoners? Will the world end in fire, ice, or both? I guess its value is in its pith, not in its deep meaning or beauty.

I found a dimpled spider, fat and white,
On a white heal-all, holding up a moth
Like a white piece of rigid satin cloth—
Assorted characters of death and blight
Mixed ready to begin the morning right,
Like the ingredients of a witches' broth—
A snow-drop spider, a flower like froth,
And dead wings carried like a paper kite.

What had that flower to do with being white,
The wayside blue and innocent heal-all?
What brought the kindred spider to that height,
Then steered the white moth thither in the night?
What but design of darkness to appal?—
If design govern in a thing so small.

Are you serious? He has so many. Here's one I love, ESL-kun.

Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening
ROBERT FROST

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
