It has its flaws but if you managed to keep reading through the first book, it's decent. First book is really difficult to read but towards the end becomes simpler and more fun to read. I'm halfway through the second book in the series and it is pretty good. The Chain of Dogs chapters are pure unadulterated kino.

You're posting this on /lit/ and comparing it to Tolkien so you're gonna get a lot of retarded responses but I do agree that the series is great.
comparing it to lotr is a zero sum game though, Erikson is an anthropologist and his autism becomes very apparent Memories of Ice onwards where the reader can start tracking the way the various species/races evolved and developed across the various locations ie the Teblor vs the Toblakai, Tolkien was much more oriented towards mythology.
I'll also say that-while thematically satisfying-the ending using the Forkrul Assail as the final baddies felt a bit out of nowhere/convenient.
Also: while I think Erikson is quite competent in his writing his actual prose skill only really starts to show in the back half of the series and especially in Kharkanas.

While most of the criticisms anons have said in this thread are complete nonsense and they've clearly never read Malazan, I will still regard LOTR as the superior work because it finishes its story in about half a million words whereas Malazan is 3 and a half million words long. Seriously, FUCK Epic Fantasy. Worst genre of all time. Whoever started the idea that its fine to give a series 10 books and millions of words should be hanged

I think I got to book 4 before I abruptly dropped it. The first one was tough to get through because of the absolute monsoon of information you have to take in, digest, and categorise, but after that the second and third books were fun enough. As another Anon said, the Chain of Dogs sequence was excellent, and I thought Erikson's approach to magic (by way of Warrens) was one of the more creative ways of exploring magic I've encountered.

But then I finished the third book, and it was a fun time, so I started the fourth, and then just... stopped. I put it down around 3 chapters in and never picked it up again, nor have I had the inclination to do so. That was about 4 years ago. No idea what happened, but I completely lost interest in everything the story was offering me. I have friends who adore the series and will take any opportunity to talk about it, but I still haven't got even a spark of interest in continuing the story.

Whiskeyjack was a cool dude, though.
