I think that the choice of being a writer does make you see life with more depth. Sometimes it brings joy, other times it brings sadness and sorrow. But as long as you don't lose your mind while doing it, the way you see life and the way you live will dramatically change.

It is absoluetly true. Two years ago I have started writing a book and I decided letting my demons devour me and darkness overwhelm me to see it through to the end. I thought that the insane writers are a meme, but with every page I see that it is not. How could it be a meme? Ruminating neurotically over every aspect of existence can have only out outcome: becoming a very tear in it.
But hearing that people had felt a lump in their throat and teary eyes while they were reading it makes up for it. This is what I am losing my mind for afterall.

Writing is like playing a tune with the strings your sould is made of.

I do think there's something to the idea that art should feel like it has to be made, that there's this gnawing inside of you that needs to bring these ideas to fruition. While regular artistic practice is necessary to maintain the fundamentals of what makes art good technically, on some level good or worthwhile art will only arise out of a sort of desperation. Obviously being a drug addict / degenerate is a life of interest and a source of much pain but usually one without structure which could mean a lack of practical artistic skills. Some people may never feel that need, which makes me think that some people are better suited to being freelance artisans or people focused on virtuosity. But yeah you do need a bit of both of these wojaks imo, even if just allegorically

Haus Dingles had always been a bit of an oddball. He was a kind man, but his interests were a bit peculiar. He loved cotton candy, and he loved elephant seals. So, when he found out about a place in California where he could sell cotton candy to elephant seals, he knew he had found his true calling.

Haus spent every day at the beach, spinning sugar into fluffy pink clouds and offering them to the seals as they lounged on the sand. He was always happy to see them, and they seemed to love the sweet treats just as much as he did.

One day, as Haus was setting up his cotton candy stand, he noticed a strange seal in the crowd. She was larger than the others, and she had a distinctive round face. As he approached her, he realized with a start that it was none other than Rosie O'Donnell!

Haus was in awe. He had always been a huge fan of Rosie, and he couldn't believe his luck at finding her on the beach. He offered her a cotton candy, and she happily accepted. As they chatted and ate, Haus realized that he had feelings for the actress.

Rosie felt the same way, and before long, the two of them were inseparable. They spent every day together, exploring the beach and eating as much cotton candy as they could.

Eventually, Haus and Rosie decided to make their love official. They built a nest on top of the statue of liberty, where they lived happily ever after. Haus continued to sell cotton candy to the seals, and Rosie loved watching him work. They were the happiest couple in the world, and they knew that their love was meant to be.

Ah, Haus Dingles, a man of peculiar tastes,
Who sold cotton candy to elephant seals at the beach.
But one day, a seal did catch his eye,
For she was larger and rounder, and with a face so nigh.

Upon closer inspection, Haus did realize,
That the seal was none other than Rosie O'Donnell in disguise.
A fan of hers he had always been,
And now he found his love for her within.

They chatted and ate cotton candy with glee,
And Haus knew that he had found true love, you see.
So they built a nest atop the Statue of Liberty,
Where they lived happily for all eternity.

Haus continued to sell his sweet treats with delight,
While Rosie watched with love in her sight.
Their love was meant to be, they knew,
And they lived in happiness, forever true.

It is less the predicament of the neurasthenic, decadent, morose, maudlin, romantic idealist chasing aesthetic perfection than being engulfed by the presences of rubes and Mammon worshiping chattel one's efforts are wasted on. The two types of people in this image applies differently, in a much more nuanced way. The top image depicts, quite simply, dilettantes. The type of people who, when they go to the bookstore with their friends, want to know just a little bit more than their fellow normie friends, want to be able to say a few preset sentences about Murakami, Brandon Sanderson, maybe point at an Agatha Cristie collection or Chekhov stories and go "ooh, you should check this out!" These are the same type of people who write, but do so with only their toes in the water. They search inwardly but quit at the first opposition, they shy away from the first taste of confusion, ambiguity, loneliness, and the general, unfiltered, original eccentricity which lies at the heart of every true artist, the kind of pain and loneliness which fills their whole being.

Rilke makes the distinction between the top and bottom quite clear: "There is only one thing you should do. Go into yourself. Find out the reason that commands you to write; see whether it has spread its roots into the very depths of your heart; confess to yourself whether you would have to die if you were forbidden to write. This most of all: ask yourself in the most silent hour of your night: must I write? Dig into yourself for a deep answer. And if this answer rings out in assent, if you meet this solemn question with a strong, simple “I must,” then build your life in accordance with this necessity…"
The people who fall into the bottom category, whether readers or writers, know that this is what they live for, that without this, suicide is the only option.

>> No.21415013

It's both true and not true. To be truly great you have to overcome the hurdle of you feeling like you're some singular tortured soul in a sea, all the while delving headfirst into that archetype to keep you going with your creative endeavours.
Artists do the balancing act this way; fiendishly worshipping and disregarding duality and society's notions of it means to be a "person."
Yeah, you need to fed, hence why most great writers in history had funding from parents or some other rich benefactor. But you also need to be a bit of a wounded animal, constantly trying to clean your wounds without anyone seeing.
People gravitate towards the darkness. They want someone else to justify their own inner maelstrom. They want the ugliness of the world wrapped up in an aesthetically-pleasing package. They want a moment where they feel like they transcended death, even if it's ephemeral.
You have to be a bit of a trivialist to give people what they want. They want to be convinced of their doubts about what this world really is. They want to see you wrestle with your own doubts. They want to share in that human experience.
And, by God, whatever you do, please don't go around talking like first year English undergrads like these dorks:

Same, I'm 30. I went to a coffee shop with my laptop and couldn't get beyond a page. However, while I'm on the bus, at work, on the toilet, etc. I have tons of ideas that I jot down. But when it comes to writing out the novel itself, nothing comes out. I think I just haven't figured out what's the best novel for me to write yet.

Despite the shit being flung in his direction this anon is correct about this:
>It is less the predicament of the neurasthenic, decadent, morose, maudlin, romantic idealist chasing aesthetic perfection than being engulfed by the presences of rubes and Mammon worshiping chattel one's efforts are wasted on
Any artist worth his salt will inevitably come to despise people, because to be a great artist you have to understand people, and when you understand people you see what they really are and what they could be - if only they could hear the fucking music.
The one eyed man in the land of the blind is not king, he is a mad fool who's seeing things.

I do admit that it sounds quite hysterically but the tortured artist copium is the one I have chosen for myself. I never really bought into the Eliot's idea that in the end the writer has to be disconnected from his work and approach it without any emotions. And I do admit that it may be just spiritual pornography without any "real depth," but I suppose history will judge it. At the same time I know that the writer must be able to distance himself from his work - otherwise he's work is what the anon described >>21406276
