On Stornlight -
Is it ever explained why suddenly Kal, Shallan, Dalinar, and Renarin all get their radiant powers in a very short timespan? Is there some kind of event that triggers the ability for people to become radiants again, or is it just coincidence

And to clarify, I understand why each individual is able to become a Radiant, but I can't remember if there's some kind of event that happens on Roshar that suddenly allows for a bunch of radiants to pop up, or if it's just coincidental timing. I know there's other characters like Jasnah who have their powers way before Kaladin and the rest, but it's odd to me that in the span of like 1-2 months in world half a dozen characters suddenly become radiants.

I'm 700pages through my re read of wayof kings. The short period of time might be just plotwise. But i could picked up that most of them had shown some traits of radiance before saying any oaths.
I would wager hearing that radiants keep existing after the abandonment of the oathpact. I just remmeber, it was one of the heralds, they send people to kill the new radiants to keep the oathpact as it was. They send to kill shalan i think by the hoid looking guy with the chicken. Also killed Tien i think.

What might had happend, no idea. From book 3or 4 you get to know that most of the spren related to the radiants were keep away form humans by this herald. And when kal, shallan and adolin visit that spren city it is said that the herald hadn't been there in years. That inattention might be the event. Hope I'm right.

Will I enjoy Bakker if I'm not a religionfag or pseud?
I've had it hyped up to me as something with a very rich, interesting world and spectacularly written battle scenes, but also extremely heavy Abrahamic undertones.

If you liked Dune and have a decently high tolerance for violence and rape you will like it.

While thematically it is in many ways similar to Berserk, it is written in fairly dense prose with lots of world building exposition and long dialogues. I don't think you need a particular outlook to enjoy it, it doesn't hit you over the head with a singular position like an Atlas Shrugged or a Native Son, it's fairly open to interpretation.

When people dislike it it tends to be because:
>They don't like epic fantasy/density
>They don't like the violence and lack of gender role defying female heros
>Don't like that the characters are all flawed and unlikeable. If you want your characters to be people you can look up to or people you would be friends with them Bakker is not the author for you.

But if you liked Dune and want a more brutal look at the Golden Path, one that makes the risks of the great disaster far more visceral but also makes the utilitarian justifications far harder to stomach, it's a great book. It also has a wonderfully detailed and original world.l and magic system.

I've heard people praise and shit on the battle scenes. I love them because they have a kaleidoscopic feel where you hear about things going on all over the battlefield, with various feudal lord's and their knights introduced, their exploits and folies described, and then it moves on. It's a panarama, it feels sort of like the Iliad, with great heros appearing and falling. It even copies the old epics by having given lines repeated during these seems "and death came swirling down," ala "rosy fingered dawn," or "and he vaunted upon him as a lion upon his prey," in the Iliad.

However, I've seen other people complain the battles lack tension because they don't center on the main characters that you know.

I suppose history fans will like them and people who don't like history will not. It's very similar to history books in how a company might get introduced, their desperate struggle to take some hill at Verdun described in detail, and then the narrative passes on from them elsewhere.

The military elements are ok. Game of Thrones does it better in terms of looking at contingency and strategy, but because it is blow for blow the story of the First Crusade dressed up, it stays pretty reasonable.

I don't think that it totally it, but it's part of it.

It is one thing for a book that is not taking itself very seriously to become somewhat hackneyed and tropey, it's more annoying when a book takes itself very seriously and does this.

However, I also think it's that Brown does world building well. Things are introduced over time, not in big exposition dumps and not (as often) as dues ex machina to move the plot along. The MC might be a bit of a Gary Stew for the first three books, but his successes and serious setbacks arise organically enough. A big problem in the genre is shit getting wrapped up very quickly by inorganic introductions (I love Gibson, but he has definitely done this, Olympus is another example).

Brown also creates differentiated enough, enjoyable characters. Some might be caricatures, but they stand out well. GRRM is really great at this. The genre as a whole struggles with this, having characters serving as mere means to move the descriptions along. Case in point from an author I actually like quite a bit: all of Alistair Reynolds' characters are emotionless engineers. At first I thought this was the point, that the Spacers were supposed to be like that, but I realized reading Pushing Ice that it gets old when it's a copy paste across different characters.

The classical antiquity LARP lends it the framework to stay more consistent IMO. Basic knowledge of the culture fills in the blanks for the reader. IMO, more authors should take advantage of this. Dune is another example, where the Firemen being space Arabs fills in a lot.

Have you got to the first big battle yet?

It starts to pick up and make more sense from there. You aren't supposed to get it. There is a very rich world and it just comes out like a fire hose. It takes time to learn what everything means. Once Kellhus is around people it gets much better because you see him learning about the world and how it works.

It's a weak point of the book that it doesn't have a POV to follow who is also new to the world until a decent amount in.

The only plus side is that on a reread you recognize a lot more is going on than you could have understood the first go around.

Bakker's asinine names don't really help lol. But after a bit it just sort of clicked for me. Felt the same way at first.

Recommend me some scifi that has AIs in it. it can be antagonistic or it might just heavily feature in the story. Ideally I wish for something that is not just some war against already super sentient AI that wants to kill everyone because it just does but more mystery/conspiracy angle, AI having uniqe point of view, evolution/weird tech etc

I think I have only read Revelation space with main antagonist AI, most other scifi if they had AI they were mostly irrelevant and not worth mentioning.
I have greatly enjoyed replicator arc in Stargate, I know the show was popsci at best but replicators were cool, borg in startrek were also ok but it was more about social aspect than tech which I didn't like.

Eye of the World is an unabashed remix of Tolkien. It continues till about halfway through book 2 then it does its own thing from there on.
The pacing is always slow as fuck until the last book or two though. It's a slow burn, but there's some particularly amazing sequences throughout the series.
As dumb as this might sound, if you're remotely intersted in WoT you should at least push through the first SIX books. The ending of Lord of Chaos is some of the best written fantasy to date.

Eye of the World is a far better book on reread because you realize how much stuff had been planned out in advance in it. For first time readers though, it's just another derivative fantasy novel until the very end when the big reveal is done.

The actual plot starts in book 2. Books 2-5 are generally considered to be the peak of the series. There's some good moments after that, but it's starts to slog until Sanderson picks it up.

There's so very much I love, but some standout parts in my mind would be the hobbits' journey from the Shire to Rivendell; everything about the Union of Maedhros and the Nirnaeth Arnoediad; and the Narn i Chin Hurin.

Just finished listening to mistborn Era 1 on audio book. I read them years ago and only remembered a vague outline of what happened. Since the new one came out now seemed like a good time to go back since I really enjoyed them the first time.

I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed them the second time around. I had figured they wouldn't hold up. Sure they aren't perfect but I found them engaging the whole way through although book 2 and 3 are weaker with the exception of the overall ending.

What I find odd is how much I prefer this story to his newer works. Stormlight 3-4 was incredibly boring and I took a number of breaks trying to finish it. Era 2 was more just lackluster. It's often commented that his characters aren't great but that they have gotten better. I just don't see it. Kelsier, Vin, Sazed seem far more fleshed out and realistic that the agsty cardboard cutouts of Kaladin and Shalan. Also stormlight seems far more meandering with so little plot progression over 1000 page long doorsteps.

If you mean the one that starts with Renegade -I'm rather fond of it. The first 5 or so books are great the latter two are sliding down if you ask me but plenty readable.

If you are looking for a decent book about space ships and AI check out fallen angel, it's a web novel with all that that entails, but it's pretty good even if part three is glacial and nothing happens, it's got two solid parts and three will be decent enough if you manage to wait out the author before picking it up.

I would say the pacing stays consistent from one book to the next. I haven't noticed any big slowdowns.
Kellhus is OP, but it seems like after the first trilogy you don't see nearly as much of him.

The Kargish culture was quite advanced in its own right. The religion of the old gods described in the Tombs of Atuan is really quite interesting and the protagonist was arguably wrong to forsake her destiny, as well as wrong for Sparrowhawk to upset the Tombs.

At least the ending is much better, even though actually it's sorta the same. The biggest difference is just the basic unchallenged assumption that all the humans 100% had each other's backs, there was no internal conflict or politics involved, and the only enemies were explicitly evil monsters.
If you rewrote the same concept now you'd have to add in a lot more ambiguity.

I read them for the first time myself only last year and I just did not enjoy the third book at all apart from the Kandra stuff. The second book had moments, but a lot of it hinged on Zane actually being more interesting than he was. Third book was just so many pages of bleakness and nothing actually happening. First book was pretty good overall, Kelsier is absolutely one of Sanderson's best characters. I think what people mean when they say he's improved on characters is they mean the supporting cast. Mistborn's supporting cast was almost functionally interchangeable in the first book, only some getting more development later on (like Breeze and Spook), meanwhile I cannot to this day tell you what Ham's personality actually was supposed to be.

I'm currently reading Hyperion by Dan Simmons.
It's a pretty decent Canterbury Tales in Space type of book, but honestly the best tale was the first one. The rest have kind of been snoozers and the frame narrative hasn't really been that interesting.

Previously finished The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin. I thought the magic system in that book was interesting and there was some cool worldbuilding, but my god it was just a brutal book. Not quite as difficult to read as The Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler, but just... grim as fuck and really graphic. Child murder, kidnapping, rape, body horror, sex slavery, the list goes on. It just wasn't a fun book.

The idea was a story about vampires living in the North East urban megaplex when a deadly virus begins to scrape across the Earth dropping the population considerably. Figuring that their food supply is about to begin running dangerously low they make their way across America and Canada to the Yukon Territory and Alaska were they hope that isolated hold out towns and settlements will be able to supply them with food for the coming future (if it isnt already obvious, they eat people). Once they reach one of these towns though they come to realize that the town already has its own more supernatural problem. Obviously, werewolves (later revealed to mainly be 2 girls, hence the lvl 25/lvl80 image, along with some other randoms), who have originally come to the isolated area to escape persecution by modern scientific society and live free where they cant be hurt or hurt anyone (much) else. With the supply chain collapsing, dumpster loot is becoming scarcer and scarcer and overhunting is bringing the elk population down, forcing the werewolves to also head in to town to search for food. This brings conflict with the vampires and a resolution I havent figured out yet.

This in turn was inspired by another story I came up with which was basically "what if Joan of Arc was a giant sexy werewolf" (More of a lvl 80 type) which itself was inspired by the Megadeth song "She wolf" of which I misinterpreted the lyrics to be about werewolves, rather than bad girlfriends.

A lot of great books deal with the consequences of a futuristic environment. Not all that many deal with the physical ones, as most are so far in the future (or have reached a level of tech) that it shouldn't be a problem by then. I'm kinda lukewarm on it, but one thing that the Expanse series does quite well, is that it takes a single piece of tech, FAST FUCKING ROCKETS!!", and more or less forgets about all other great innovations that would probably mean at least as much, and just goes from there. It's lazy, but they made it work.
