Most of your books appear unread, what's the point of a bookshelf if you don't read the books it contains?

Not sure whether it's based or cringe that the only book that has been read is The Bell Curve. Based on all that extra Tolkien that will never get read, I lean toward the latter.

That better be a piece of literary criticism on the novel. Otherwise I find your shelf cringe, not for its contents, but because you felt the need to post it for validation. Now it's clear to me those books are only there to impress others and not because you enjoy reading them.

Missing from bottom left is this. Forgot to shelve for the picture, reading The Iliad (not pictured) and pulled it for reference. Cool book, though the writing is incredibly dry (which is fine by me, just very academic in tone for anyone who might be interested).

You can open them gently or firmly, the crease will still form. You can not bend a pliable material without creasing and deforming it. The only way you can do this is by not opening them. >You can open them gently or firmly, the crease will still form
Wrong. Creases form when a flat surface gets bent at a sharp angle. If you keep it open with a gentle curvature, creasing will only form at the edges of the book spine. And even that will take much longer. Only used books which have been through many hands should look creased. And if yours look like that you're just an ape who can't into paperback.

Last time I checked I found the first 4 volumes translated by Kallistos Ware which seemed decent (I wouldn't know though, I base this on second hand opinions) but the 5th volume was translated by someone else and wasn't so well received (I distinctly remember people even complaining about numerous print errors and such). I was happy to find this edition however, although the language seems slightly archaic compared to contemporary Romanian (I have to occasionally consult a dictionary while reading).

Different anon here, but I also try to be kid to my paperbacks. Some are going to show wear, of course, but others I can keep looking brand new. I dunno, The Bell Curve seems like the sort of thing a /pol/cel who stumbled over to /lit/ would have on his bookshelf.

I don't care one way or the other about The Bell Curve, but I absolutely hate these goddamn modern "high end" editions. Most of them aren't particularly well bound, they're not worth anything to collectors, and they're just designed to be the worst kind of showoff pieces. It is pretty funny when someone has Franklin Library editions on their shelves though. They were made by The Franklin mint, the company better known for making shit like this: https://franklinmint.com/collections/wall-sculptures/products/american-bald-eagle-bird-of-prey-wall-sculpture

why do people rip on penguin paperbacks / anything penguin publishing so much? They seem fine. I read 99% of my stuff in digital form AKA pirating shit and throwing it onto my Kindle so I'm not really sure what the issue is.

I honestly wish there was a reliable collection of commented classics (old and modern), Folio is not always that good. I fell for the meme a few times, like with this beautiful leatherbound edition of Tolkien's translation of the poetic Edda. This is what I have at my parent's, but I even have somewhere 'King Lear' in the most memesque Folio edition, the huge 17th century style one worthy of American Psycho's card scene.

I mostly buy good but cheap paperback editions (slightly better than Penguin), and I vaguely intend to have the ones I keep leatherbound at some point. Someone in my family did this (he found a cheap craftsman in Morrocco), it looks pretty good.

Impressive. Not a KM fan, but "children's books" can be incredibly good. I'd recommend things like the Little House on the Prairie and Flicka series.

Nice! A lot of you have some really nice selections. Though my only advice would be to remove the used/purchase stickers on the spine or wherever. It's a shame because often especially if its been on for awhile, the adhesive is real nasty and can pull away at hardcovers/paperbacks alike.
