I’ve actually read it. It’s shit. Extremely shallow, like a collection of Gizmodo posts as it desperately tries to mindfuck you into repeating the meme phrase. A quarter of the book is appendices about some tech development and how it’s totally going to change everything (again in braindead tech blog cheerleader fashion).

That said, the technological gestalt is a real danger and I think the reason these individuals are found menacing and powerful is the result of them being viewed from within this gestalt. It changes our entire perspective (which is the nature of a gestalt) and our values feel corrupted, of which the literal technological world order (like being forced to take vaccines) is just the outer manifestation. But looked at as nature, as individuals as they are, they're exactly as you describe them. And inevitably at the mercy of chance, though in their mind to an ever lessening degree.

That and I think the reality of it being a zombie system with boobs at the helm is both too complicated and too boring for a lot of people. The fantasy of fighting against comic book villains is much more 'fun' and simple (good vs. evil).

They're too high up to feel the effects of their incompetence. Since they aren't feeling the effects they think everything's going fine. It's the boomer "just give them a firm handshake" mentality. They're completely out of touch and I also suspect they're really fucking pretentious and have extremely fragile egos. Meaning they don't want to know about their incompetence. They enjoy their status too much and don't want to face the reality that - just because you hold a position - that doesn't mean you're qualified to hold it.
