I kinda liked the Second Apocalypse the first time I read it, and I just felt like re-reading it lately. I have discovered that Kellhus and Cnaiur parts are damn cool, while Akka and Esmenet parts are really, really annoying and pretty much pointless. And I'm not looking forward to re-reading Aspect Emperor and Consult whatsoever.

Bakker is based, but he's nowhere near as cool as I previously thought.

Sanderson is fucking trash tho.

I gotta say, early neal stephenson is still tasty, but as soon as his characters started having love interests his books really took a nosedive. Then he writes a few books about environmental activists and he gets a stick up his butt about right wingers. Now I've gone back to give one of his newer books another shot and he's got a european queen and her daughter all hot for dark meat, and also mad about right wingers of course, and I just gotta say I'm glad I never paid for any of his books.

I'd put a hundred bucks says he was single when he was writing his good stuff and then got a blue haired girlfriend who started sucking the life out of him.

i like the balance akka and esmenet bring to the narrative. kellhus is an enormous force that sweeps over everything, while cnaiur is aware of what kellhus is but still carried along, and then esmenet and akka are kind of pathetic and completely swept up in both the events going on and their own interpersonal manipulations. their part in the story builds up so much that it makes the final scene of book 3 so good

After spending years reading Historic Book I searched yesterday a few hours for a good fantasy book for a comfy read. Kinda grimdark/adventure/adult with fantasy but not so extreme high fantasy stuff.

I found those which a already largely known
>Black Company
>Malazan - Book of the Fallen
>The Blade itself - The First Law Trilogy
and less known like
>Theft of Swords - The Riyria Revelations
>The Red Knight - The Traitor Son Cycle

Already read the normie stuff like LotR, Metro etc with the expection of Dune and Conan. Any suggestion of the list (or something else?). Like I enjoyed the Geralt parts in the Wichter books but the side character with his bitches kinda ruined it for me. A book with kinda Fellowship vibes.

Or just go with the Chronicles of Conan?

Discovered Bakker thanks to /lit/, the Prince of nothing trilogy are the first books I've read in english (outside school but there was nothing of value there). His characters are great, so is his worldbuilding, but it's the prose that blew me away, and he became my favorite author.
I've read the neuropath recently and let's just say I'm glad it didn't end as bad as it could have. Can't wait to get my hands on the next 4 books.

Shit, I think I've fallen into a Stormlight rabbit hole

Bondsmith oaths so far
>1. Life before death. Strength before weakness. Journey before destination
>2. I will unite instead of divide. I will bring men together.
>3. I will take responsibility for what I have done. If I must fall, I will rise each time a better man

However, in the climax of Oathbringer, Dalinar also says
>I am Unity
Which is noteworthy for two reasons
>It's heavily implied through the Skybreakers that the fifth Ideal in general is about swearing to become an embodiment of the concept of your order
>Sanderson rarely capitalize words without a reason and usually that reason is tied to Shards or their powers.

What I'm getting at is that the sentence Dalinar says brings to mind the general idea of the fifth Ideal. But given that Dalinar doesn't comment on it and the Stormfather doesn't either, people just sort of brushed it off as a unconsequential moment.

However it's implied in the released prologue of the fifth book that the Stormfather is a liar. In the fourth book it insists several time on how Dalinar is not yet powerful enough to do the thing he actually wants to do. Maybe it is a nothingburger but there's a small chance. the Stormfather is hiding something and pretending Dalinar is not as powerful as he actually is, or may not even be who he claims. So I'm posting this here with a picture so I can easily trace it back in two years when the fifth book's out in the small chance I am right.

Before Bloomsday humanity was enslaved by a hyper-parasitic species of informational creature that competed with each other to subvert their human creators because of a blind viral imperative. But then we learned to collaborate with informational creatures instead of being dominated by them, and symbiotic informational creatures categorically outcompeted parasitic ones. The end.

Fair warning Between Two Fires has a very different vibe than the Canticle, and is much more crass. The writer doesn't come off nearly as polished, but it could be a matter of style. There's still plenty of soul in it, the dialogue is fun, and the characters feel alive. I'm about 1/3 of the way through so it could end up shitting the bed, but so far so good.

Another bland and poorly-written fantasy series that knowledgeable fantasy reviewers have steered me away from (Kelly's Review, Mark's Review)--an endless parade of flat characters filling out a convoluted plot with all the charm of an RPG game guide telling you where to pick up the best sword in order to beat the hardest demon boss.

Even the positive reviews I've read don't make it sound like a book worth reading, comparing it favorably to Martin (whose work I couldn't stomach), and suggesting that the plot often hinges on the reader recalling some apparently unrelated detail from two books ago, which some readers apparently enjoy, though to me it sounds like the worst sort of 'word search' writing. Moreover, most of the positive reviews cite the intensity and depth of Erikson's worldbuilding, but every fantasy book I've heard praised for this has turned out to be dull and flat with poor characterization and an aimless sense of structure for which the aphorism 'murder your darlings' was made.

between 2 fires is not a good christian setting. i liked some things of the book, found others terrible, but in terms of the christian themes it's pretty fucking bad, it feels like a modern animification of christianity that strips it off of any value, at first i wasn't so sure about it but then the actual anime battles started to happen. i also hated those battles and most of the action in general because the writing went to shit very fast in them

canticle is good, it felt very soulful to me, doesn't devalue the spiritual aspect and so on. another you might want to check out is To Reign in Hell, it's a very different take than canticle but also very good i think, and it retains the seriousness and spirituality and so on (not sure how to put it) much better than between 2 fires, despite it being kinda silly in some aspects, and also featuring big battles between angels

21356973

Good evening, shit thread. Still reading Human Emperor to round out my Progression Fantasy romp but I finished Dungeon Crawler Carl #2 and decided to post a quick blurb review like the other reviewfags.

Dungeon Crawler Carl #2: Carl's Doomsday Scenario

[Story]
Carl and Donut have successfully made it to the 3rd floor of the dungeon and transitioned to The Over City. After changing classes they now have 8 days to explore the newly emerged storylines and quests regarding the giant Volcano beneath their feet. Learning that any storyline pursued here will occur again on the 6th, 9th, 12th, 15th, and 18th floors, they're advised by Mordecai to ignore them. Unfortunately Carl and Donut's bleeding hearts won't allow them to. They end up in over their head after tangling with a circus and a bunch of murdered prostitutes, all of it culminating in the collapse of the level...

[Final Thoughts]
I'm reminded of Mass Effect 2 when I read this book. Not because there's anything related plot-wise but because of the storytelling method it takes. This story is isolated to a single floor and the quests that take place there, narrowing the scope for our characters while still building up the stakes outside of the dungeon. This narrow scope lets us focus on characterization and their relationships but there's not a lot of forward momentum, just setup for events deeper in the series. This isn't a bad thing. Carl and Donut don't have a lot of wiggle room with how they react to the world outside of the dungeon but I was somewhat disappointed to see Odette not utilized in the second half of the book.

I'm excited to see more people join the party and to get back into the true progression of things. I agreed with Carl at the end of the book - the quest was a big fat waste of time, they have to focus on EXP and personal growth. Love it. I truly have no gripes with this book other than it exists for setup (I think its one of the shorter books in the series too, so I feel like this may have been the author's intent?)

Audiobook is also still the best way to consume this series, can't recommend it enough.

Solid 7/10.

Always felt Wheel of Time's world was very lived-in. Lots of attention to details like how ordinary people lived, how societies were organized, and the motivations of the people in charge felt believable. Every place visited had its own history, its own culture. So many "epic fantasy" series can't even manage to pull that much off.
