Question 1:
How do you worldbuild for intersteller sci-fi without getting overwhelmed.

Question 2:
Also, what kind of stories do you guys like to read in sci-fi?

Question 3:
What is everyone's opinions on robot protagonists

>> No.21301896

vernor vinge is a math professor, asimov basically wrote about math even tho he was a biochem phd, clarke was publishing nonfiction papers about vacuum tubes and satellites, heinlein was an aeronautics engineer and a navy officer
niven (ringworld, mote in god's eye) also studied math

basically, you cant understand space concepts unless you understand the math and physics behind it
the most important thing about writing fiction is being credible, space operas are read by physics students and future engineers, so the second they notice (and they are guaranteed to notice) your thermodynamics are wonky or your constants wouldnt work or this is not how gasses or metals expand etc etc, suspension of disbelief is ruined and they are likely to go online to brag about finding a flaw too

the first thing i wonder about in your op's picture for example is energy efficiency of this robot, why is it humanoid, what is powering it, how big would batteries alone be, how much does all that metal weighs, etc

>tl;dr
at least make sure you are smart enough for sci fi first, or else you will lose your credibility on a technicality, forget the plot and the characters and world building or any big ideas or themes

have a bump, I'll answer more thoroughly when I have time later but
1) I let myself be overwhelmed, it motivates me to learn more and more so that I can worldbuild to the degree I find satisfying
2) character driven, not world-driven - I want an autistically detailed world that simply allows new or different interactions between characters
3)haven't read a good robot protagonist maybe ever

Don't. There are 800 million stars in our arm of the galaxy, you'll never be able to worldbuild space the way you can a country or planet. Just focus on your story and the settings your characters are going to travel to

Do you guys like it when there are lots of things you don't understand in a book? Things that are mentioned by name, but not explained? Especially things about magic and the world order?

Why write scifi? It's all been done before. At least pick a genre that isn't chock full of dreck.

Robots work on pure logic; they do not make mistakes. No human can ever truly relate to a robot - they're just so fucking far beyond us. I would not use a genuine robot as a main character, ever. All my characters who have to interact with a machine intelligence are always a bit terrified of what it might end up doing. Of course, it's set in a supremely distopic universe and the AI was built to ensure that far-flung human civilizations stayed in a constant state of cold-war flux and co-dependence, manipulating trade and creating artificial scarcities as needed to maintain the balance between human groups light-years apart.

You're a retard, the op was correct in what he said. If you're too retarded to write science fiction, don't attempt to do so. You have to have a thorough understanding of science to do so.

I have a question and this thread make sense to post it here

I'm trying to write some shit fantasy lore in English to challenge myself since its not my native language. I'd like to go for a dark fantasy style where a piece of land the size of New York is floating like an island in nothingness. No one knows how or why but that's how it is (everything would be done from the inhabitants' point of view)

This setting should be depressing, people struggling to gather resources in this world, survive against unnatural phenomenons and so on.

Any good books to read or general recommendations for this ? Even short stories.

To give a quick example, Mordheim from the warhammer franchise is a strong starting point for the overall atmosphere I'm trying to create.

I would just do it small scale, focusing on just a couple characters instead of some big action war epic. The Jaunt is a Stephen King short story about teleportation set in the future that's really close to what I'm describing

this. Niven got one detail wearing about the orbital phase of the Ringworld, and he was constantly surrounded by absolute nerds at conventions shouting "Ringworld is Unstable" until he corrected the error in a future edition. If you aren't prepared to deal with that, or ironic filk songs about your scientific errors, it might be best to hold off on hard sci-fi

That being said I'll link you an EXCELLENT resource for this stuff. http://projectrho.com/public_html/rocket/.. Everything you've ever wanted to know about space travel will be on this site. Use it wisely, and have fun!
