>“I have used lifespan Gu, I have lived much longer than you can imagine. I used to wish for a long life before, but now, I am tired of this thought. Life has become increasingly boring. Sometimes, the final destination of the journey is not important, the important thing is the process of the journey and how you feel during the journey.”
>Frost Tide tribe’s leader involuntarily opened his eyes wide at these words, it was hard for him to understand Fang Yuan’s way of life: “You are saying the position of saintess is not important, the important thing is helping Xie Han Mo in this competition?”
>“Correct, but there is still more. You talked of the dark side of politics and promised to gift me mermaid beauties, both have no importance to me. Let me put it this way so you might understand a little, I have lived long enough that I am already sick of wearing a mask to live. Death is not scary to me at all. Right now, I only want to live using my truest emotions and feelings, I will achieve my goals in my own way. Only by living like this can I feel the excitement of life and the desire towards living!”
>Frost Tide tribe’s leader was dumbstruck and stupefied, he finally understood as he shouted: “So that’s it, you are a lunatic! You have said so much but they are nothing more than saying you have lived long enough and don’t want to live anymore! So be it you were a Gu Immortal, but you, a mere rank three Gu Master, want to live life your own way? You are dreaming!”
>Fang Yuan smiled: “You think becoming a Gu Immortal can allow people to live according to their will? Live without wearing a mask? A place with people has society and conflict. Survival and living are two different things. The way you want to live does not have to depend on your strength and cultivation level, but your own heart.”
>After a brief pause, Fang Yuan continued: “Actually, low strength is also quite interesting. When you live without a mask, low strength will allow you to face more difficulties and challenges of reality; surpass these difficulties, face these challenges, and life becomes much more wonderful.”

The Sword of the Lictor, The Book of the New Sun #3 - Gene Wolfe (1982)

The most troublesome part of writing about these individually is that so much changes in each book that it may invalidate what I've written previously. This also presents a difficulty in remaining relatively spoiler-free. I could write about the five book omnibus as a single work, which is the edition I'm reading, but I don't have any interest in doing so.

This one starts off having skipped some time, traveling, and events, but as Severian often explains, he doesn't want to write about everything. An element of the narrative that's becoming more and more noticeable is that Wolfe didn't write this to have a singular Chehkov's gun, but rather an entire armory replete with them. Every story element seems to have its place and and they all neatly fit together. Seemingly everything pays off in some way. Life isn't like that at all, but it does make for a satisfying story. That makes it a matter of when rather than if previous information will become meaningful and relevant. There's a considerable number of explicitly stated reveals this time, which may be appreciated by readers.

Severian continues to meander toward his ever new destinations, but he's a changed man now, both literally and figuratively. I still wouldn't call it so much character growth as a superimposition, but that's a matter of semantics, like the Ship of Theseus. I like this more competent, confident, introspective, perceptive, and philosophical Severian. No longer is he utterly baffled by the events around him. He's now able to see the connections between disparate actions, even retrospectively, and detail his thought process and provide conclusions. He has his own goals now.

In many ways though Severian is still the same guy he's been from when he departed from Nessus, as only months have passed after all. One moment he's confessing his devotion to a woman, then the next he's having sex with some woman he just met. I don't see anything wrong with casual sex in of itself, but I don't think he's had sex with a single woman where there isn't a power imbalance greatly in his favor. In one case a married woman is infodumping on Severian and then he tells her that's a nice story, but it's time for sex. It's not quite the sexposition from the Game of Thrones TV series though. Severian notes about the one whom he professes devotion that, "the kind and even noble Severian who existed only in [her] mind". He even says that everything he says matters and nothing she says does. Then he considers "forcing himself on her", but decides that would be a bad move.

I considered rating this lower due to some of the middle part and the inclusion of an extended situation that I tend to dislike. Fortunately that situation resolved itself in a way that gave me a jolt that maybe I shouldn't have liked, but I did. The scenes near the end were also especially nice, so the ratings remains the same.

Rating: 4/5

Will confirm this Anon. Last year I did a read-along of BOTNS as my second read-through just a few months after I finished BOTNS the first time. At the end of each book, the group had Alzabo Soup on for about 2 hours talking about the books, and it's a lot of definitive nonsense. Re-Reading Wolfe is done by two literature professors in their 50's and, I believe, and they're happy to spend a lot of time speculating and theorizing but they definitively state they are doing that, whereas Alzabo Soup prop themselves up as "definitive voices" on the book and assert their speculations as cold hard fact about the series and the author.

Alzabo Soup are terrible.

In the ending of Shadow podcast they outright say they don't give a fuck what Wolfe wanted to say, interviews he has done etc.
What was very frustrating listening to their podcasts was they would often go on 40+ minutes rants about the dumbest takes imaginable, then when they would come across a piece of info that disproved them, they would say "Hey, if this thing doesn't agree with our take, there you go" then completely ignore it and continue to talk 40+ minutes about their bogus take when they have the chance.

Multiple times they have the dumbest takes that are absolutely indisputably proved wrong by the text.

Not only that but the takes they give oftentimes make BotNS into a worse book, which is the thing I don;t get. You have several possible theories. Why go both with the one that is less supported by the text, but also the one that dumbs down the book itself, when you have a better alternative on both counts?

Those guys are absolute clowns.

Rereading Wolfe aren't professors I think, they are long time fans (since at least the 90s). I think you are mistaking them with the Gene Wolfe Literary Podcast, they discuss Wolfe but aren't on BotNS yet.

Yeah, I really really liked it
Maybe it just happened to be what I was in the mood for
Stuff always happening, it's snappy, got action, got weirdness, actual fun jokes

Some flaws I've recognized in his other books:
fucking off to drawn out and uninteresting PoV's to build suspense (lazy!)
characters repeating the same arcs

Nothing in this book dragged on, all the PoV's served some (interesting) purpose. Sanderson figured out how to make them short, rather than long and boring when away from the action.
The main character didn't repeat his arc of being mopey, it made a point of him having overcome that,. Expected Kaladin 2.0, but got pleasantly surprised. It even felt earned.
Other characters got their own arcs, one of may have felt a bit forced, some were more organic. But at least they made sense.

I'm also happy about the book respecting my memory and not being too repetitive, like re-explaining the magic system, etc. There was brief summation of the plot and past characters as they came up in the book, nothing too stiff
Well.. It's being VERY clear about what's going on in the terms of the relevant superpowers and how they are being used, it's not like anyone could get confused (Wax needs a metal anchor to Push off, I get it..)
I just expected to be put through alomancy powers 101, glad that I got to skip magic school

I'm 25% through Lord Foul's Bane and not enjoying it. The first couple chapters were interesting describing Covenant's leprosy. Once he's in the fantasy world it's nothing but the most boring fantasy cliches. I don't mean swordfights with orcs, I mean constant expository babble about ancient prophecies. ("Is that... an ordinary gold wedding ring on your finger?! You must be the ancient lord returned, just as the prophecy foretold!")There is a lot of magic but it is wasted on mundane activities like fixing broken pottery and healing bruises. There has been no action at all. Donaldson's only attempt at an action scene so far was making Covenant walk down a staircase. Yes, not chased by goblins or escaping a burning building, just slowly walking down some stairs.

So far I'm not seeing why this is so highly regarded. Unless one of you says it gets a lot better soon I'm dropping it.

The choice of scale is arbitrary. It might as well have been A B C D E, or 1 2 3 4 5, or one of those in reverse order, or something else even. It could have been even as vague as having two arrows pointing at opposite directions "having more literary merit" and "having less literary merit". The point is that there is a clear and obvious scale of things that are perceived as relatively good versus other things. To complain about an arbitrary symbols used to convey subjective, qualitative information is simply you looking for a fight. Anyone is able, after looking at the chart for 5 seconds, to distinguish what is the meaning of SABCD, as it is implied from the context. That you need to know what exactly is the meaning behind the letters speaks of one of two things or both; you can't google, and you are lying.

what I mean by this, is that whenever you read Chinese science fiction novels, you come to recognize a pattern: every antagonist or otherwise morally reprehensible character will always have a non-Chinese name, and their race will not be Chinese. In fact, it will be up to the glorious Han Chinese main protagonist to stop their treasonous plot against humanity(the Chinese).

I was just googling him and saw the date, good to see some acknowledgement here. He deserves a thread more so than some of the people I've seen get one.
Blood Music is an impressive novel, it's mind bending, and takes the scifi concept to a logical conclusion that I had trouble comprehending. Starts off like a thriller, shifts into post-apoc and ends with the universe itself changing.
I'm going to read Queen of Angels next.

Wacky, but I guess it makes sense something like that would exist given the cultural capital vidya has nowadays. Thank you for the link, I don't think that one in particular is quite my bag but it's an interesting concept and not really an angle I'd considered for serious sff writing.

LitRPGs can either be characters in a "real" world gaining the power to view the world as a game, or it can be about characters actually stuck in a game.
>writing about made up characters from their dnd campaigns
This isn't really called litRPG. Record of Lodoss War and Malazan are both examples of this approach.

That's a fair point, the better ones almost all have either some parodic angle going or are just so fully committed that even if it's stupid it still works. The worst ones are the ones that just kinda lazily tack on menus to an existing magic system, the better ones actually try and work out how such a system would work in the world, how society would be, etc. Infinite Realm is actually quite good at that later one, though I find it hard to recommend because unless you're really into the author's deep-dive on how his system works it's just a bit iffy. Cool worldbuilding and characterisation, at least.
Personal favourite LitRPG is Dungeon Crawler Carl, because that kind of leans into the parodic angle but does it solely to contrast with how fucked up the situation actually is.

>> No.21287764

>>21287427
If you're interested, Dungeon Crawler Carl is pretty widely regarded as the only series that takes that premise and actually executes it well, regardless of your opinion on the series itself. Most of the people writing it just handwave why video game mechanics exist, DCC actually gives a why and how.

>> No.21287768

>>21287764
There are others that do explain why they exist as an underlying 'thing' of reality, and some do even a halfway decent job, but DCC works because it's an imposed thing and clearly 'not real', as it were.

I didn't really like Eye of the World when I first read it, it was very formulaic. I think the second, and especially the third books are much better. It's not until half way through the second book that Rand stops reacting to the plot and starts to try and take control, which is understandable in-universe but also a bit of a problem pacing-wise.

Also one particular flaw I find with the series is that Mat doesn't start getting an actual character until book 3. Jordan really should have moved some of his content forward, because he's legitimately a high point of the series.

I usually don't have trouble keeping track, but fantasy or sci-fi audiobooks with a lot of made up words or names can sometimes be difficult to remember what are who they are since I can't visualize the spelling.
>>21286258
You're right, but I feel obligated to point out that in the fifth one there are two characters who are older men who each mentor a younger protagonist who have similar names. When I listened to the audiobook I thought the two were the same guy for the first quarter of the book.

>I was looking for the other way around but I take what I can get
You mean, you want Dragon female with Male humanoid? I don't think I've seen one like that desu, and I've seen some shit. At best you can get male dragon (in dragon form) fucking a female humanoid.

It is exceedingly hard to make a sex scene of giant, four-legged, fire-breathing Lizards with wings hot. With humanoid forms it's easier, because you just add dragon characteristics and traits to humanoid forms. There's also the possibility of a male dragon and human female, which works because women find extremely big cocks and even bigger partners hot as hell...but it just doesn't work if you take a small human male and big dragon female. I mean, it could work if the dragon was rather small, let's say twice as big as a human, but otherwise you'd have to write some tricky shit, i.e. a humanoid male drinking a potion or casting a spell that makes him or at least his cock gigantic, allowing for a weird coupling of big human and normal dragon.

If you want a male humanoid and a female non-humanoid, you can do at most centaurs without breaking the suspension of disbelief.
The idea of a male humanoid and female dragon is cute, though, so it can work as a story in itself. I know DnD subreddits joke a lot about Bards seducing Dragons. There surely must be some fic like that on AO3 or similar site.

In the meantime, catch a dragon with male human pic from my Dragon collection
