This is something I've been confused about for a while. Libertarians seem to me to be clearly not left-wing at all. I would think that the more libertarian you become the lesser a left winger you could possibly be.

But then are libertarians centrist/neutral or right-wing, and when it comes to fairness of systems (right-wing) and not outcomes (left-wing) I would think that libertarians at least lean slightly right.

I think you're missing the fact that while many Libertarians have right-wing values and sympathies, you're 1) missing the historical context which is necessary for a true description of left and right and 2) missing the fact that while individuals may have certain sympathies, the political theory may not endorse those sympathies. Libertarians suppose that if the state is just structured legally such that it's small and stays out of their way, then a society that lives up to their own personal right-wing values will arise organically, but history doesn't bear this out. In the United Sates, libertarians have failed to end the Fed and money printing, end foreign wars, create markets of surplus, and all of these other things that they said it would do, and it's succeeded in legalizing drugs, legalizing gay marriage, allowing private universities and high schools to be co-opted by leftists, and all of these other failures. Libertarianism is all about freedom of the individual, and it accepts all the basic principles of enlightenment liberalism and that's why it's left wing. The political theory and what they want to happen in light of the political theory are different things.

My theory is that in the U.S., British Commonwealth, and Europe, to varying degrees, Libertarianism has become the default right-wing political theory simply because right-wing politics was literally made illegal and lost every major political battle it fought for 200 years. It's literally illegal for a Governor in the United States to guide his political actions with religion in the United States. So what's left? The right's only choice is to advocate that the State leaves them alone and cope by believing if it just does that, things will work out.
