I can only assume /lit/ grew up. It’s been six years since his initial fifteen minutes of fame. I’m no longer the college sophomore who thought “The Necessity of Virtue” was novel and revelatory, and I’m past the age where his work really resonates with me. “Clean your room” hits differently when you’re a college student living in filth, chasing girls, and getting drunk every other night than it does when you’re a grown ass man.

I also think that JP has lost some of his luster in the post-Trump/pandemic world. The type of grandstanding over free speech that really launched his career doesn’t have the same currency in an online ecosystem that’s more jaded about liberalism. His criticisms of liberalism (i.e., “we’ve been fed this endless diet of rights, what happened to responsibility?”) are less novel today. I remember being 20, thinking “wow that’s so true”, and then discovering more articulate thinkers like Richard Weaver, Christopher Lasch, James Burnham, Roger Scruton and so on who utterly MOG JP. This sort of stuff is much more widely known today, and I think partly why people lost interest in JP.

I’m honestly surprised he’s still discussed here as much as he is. All of the pop culture war output from 2016 (muh “regressive left”, muh “classical liberal values”, muh “political correctness”, muh “social justice warriors” and “speech rights”) already feels like ephemera from a long lost civilization whose culture eludes comprehension, stuff that’s imminently destined for the memoryhole and thrift store. I think JP managed to catch and ride the Zeitgeist at just the right moment, when the perennial reaction against college libs needed a spokesman who was more articulate than the usual YouTube mouthbreathers.

The issue I have with that is it implies everyone is has (or that there is) in template ideal for people to strive toward. Some people are really small minded and have small ideals. Every man has personal failings including Peterson, so why did he take a stand against transgenders since that is a collective issue?
