He's undeniably one of the great poets of the last 100 years. What they did to besmirch his legacy was shameless and disgraceful.

One of the greatest poems out there. Such a smart wry comment on the sort of growing freedom and vulgarity that is viewed as progress: Larkin sees the vulgarity of later generations and wonders if older generations saw him the same way. The 'high windows' of the last stanza is a leap in logic yet fits the poem perfectly. The high windows become a sort of nihilistic symbol for heaven, replacing cathedral windows. Rather than termination in an afterlife there is only this 'infinity' of progress, the endless blue sky. Little touches like 'outdated combine harvester' reinforce the themes. Of course I bet 95% of this poem will go over the heads of the illiterates here.

Of course you can give your analysis as to why it's so, as I have mine. Try it, show which words are out of place, do not contribute anything to the poetic narrative, or are cliched. That should be the standard for 'mid'

Other great qualities about the poem: notice how Larkin is able to balance the casual sections with the poetic sections through subtle rhyme. The first stanza purposely creates jarring enjambments that contain subtle slant rhyme (kids/she), then strings together more rhymes (paradise/lives/side/slide) as he ramps up the poetic argument. By the final stanza he shifts to a highly formal quatrain with ABAB rhyme which is why the description of the High Windows feels so grand. This shows mastery of form and is actually how 'free verse' should be executed. He violates then reestablishes form in an organic manner which best fits the poem. Analyze and learn.

I'm pretty sure that the GCSE exam board don't determine the curriculum, we covered a lot of stuff in english literature that had nothing to do with the exams and we were better for it, and that was back in 2016, Owen wasn't on the exam but his stuff was still being taught.
