You can still get a lot of their older releases for dirt cheap on the second hand market, and they're well made if nothing else. I've bought a few printed in the 70s I'd have sworn were fresh off the press if not for the date on them.

I have many of these volumes from their inception as nonesuch press books or Limited Editions club editions. I buy them for less than $10.00 at my used book store and sell them online, then take the proceeds and acquire the source book. The nonesuch dickens will likely remain outside of my grasp forever--so I've gone with a combination of the folio derivation and the Everyman's. Odd how such hight quality presses had their property bought off, and now they're sold by a series of "luxury presses".

These are seriously shit shelves in terms of durability. I make my own shelves and don't care that much because I hide the imperfections with a face frame and fantastic finishing abilities.

You need to cut rabbets or Dados in the sides so that the shelves sit inside a recess. This allows the wood to move during seasonal temperature and humidity changes and adds strength to the overall structure. You can also use metal fasteners and brackets, but those give an industrial aesthetic.

You can also consider a system of varying, stacked cleats and alternating butt joints for strength, mobility, durability, and ease of assembly. But you can't just slap wood together or it will warp like crazy when the weather changes.

Does anyone else see the gaps opening up on each side? That's a sign of poor joinery.
