Werewolfs fights and such mean it's the Hidden Realm arc. Mediocre, but decent ending. Then you get a kino wandering and improving adventure, which then transitions into the Twilight City arc. And then yet another cool arc.

Dunno why the other anon called me a cunt, it's a serious improvement compared to the previous events.

Just got about half way through Synners and stopped reading it. I just couldn't get into the boring story and the boring characters. Also, the author can't seem to write cool cyberpunk dialog. She writes dialogue in such an odd way. It's like the character will say some flavorful thing with no narrative context, and then a completely bland piece of narrative material. Like "Yeah I was thrashing over on Westend yesterday, those damn kids were juicin and toxin like the Big One never happened! But yeah, back to the tax returns, I filed them and they should be with the IRS. Can't wait to get back to cyberspace to waste some punks!"

It really opened by eyes to why Neuromancer was so great, Gibson really combines flavor and narrative into one. Same with stuff like Snow Crash and Diamond Age

From age 12 to 18, I read only serious fantasy books and detested any power fantasy or sexual stuff in books, I was only interested in original metaphysical ideas, concepts and philosophy of various characters and factions in fantasy books.

Since I turned 20, I read basically only power fantasies and harem books.

The concept of a setting with immortals running around and them just being NOT that big of a deal because there's even better immortals is fascinating, and I've read... Like... One western xianxia-esque thing that actually handled it decently (so far), and nothing from Chinese stuff. I too liked the idea of xianxia but haven't found many I enjoyed. I liked Ze Tian Ji. Not really that much murderhoboing but the power system aspect is well developed. MC stays a genuine underdog for an unusually long while, and when he gets to kick ass it's actually hype and well earned.

I finished listening to Way of Kings. Half of this book could have been cut out and it would make no difference. I imagine myself turning this book into a comedic adventure film. I imagine bridgemen falling into the chasm with the Wilhelm scream and Kaladin and his boys cracking jokes as they kill "Parshendi". Instead we get this self serious pseud nonsense where the end of every chapter has to be some reflection on honor or leadership. The readers for the audio were very good though.

Also fuck Shallan. Her entire story is pointless.

Then she straight up enters sex traffic in some bizarre PG-13 cuckoldry secuence. I am not usually bothered by this, but it came out so unexpectedly. I remember enjoying it but I was also a retarded teenager in the mid 2000s when I read it last. It's hard to make a judgement about it in that sense. Around the time Twilight started to become a thing I was in high school. I was reading Twilight Watch and did a book report presentation about it. It didn't help that it was actually about vampires. I didn't have a clue what Twilight was so it made for a very awkward reaction from the class. Half of them thought I was talking about vampire romance novels.

Secondly, the service people do actually manhandle chinese people abroad but the common issues are other mainland chinese, for example from the confucius institutes which are thinly-veiled state apparatus at universities in the west, will tell on them to their local and state agents back in China.
The Chinese will then contact them, often by entering their parents home and calling from that line as a threat, and making it clear they're to stop talking bad about China or even ordering them to move back to mainland China or else.
Some of them do it online as well. Chinese accounts on western social media sites that can be tied to particular chinese people will get similar threats.

It's hard to really portray a bisexual character as such unless they have multiple lovers, which tends to be a thing I've seen a few times, bi characters will just have a bunch of one-off lovers that show up for a scene or two and then disappear, but that said you can have a bi character just enter a straight relationship. Bi often just means "basically gay" for characters that wind up in a proper relationship most of the time, so it's kinda refreshing.

And done. 10/10 it's okay.

My enjoyment was bogged down a lot by just how frequently my suspension of disbelief was stretched by the concept of the twin cities and breach. Many details are quite well thought out but for me that doesn't absolve just how shaky the foundation is. I suspect that Mieville is the kind of writer that doesn't like to fall back on magic to explain things. I'd be okay with that if the cities were a metaphor for a broader concept, but none is explored, it's just a novel idea. I'm also not a fan of the reveal for just how mundane it is, and the amount of exposition required to explain Bowden's involvement is clumsy.

Despite that I quite like the way that Mieville writes. The narrative is well paced and his dialogues read quite naturally, with a lot being left to infer.

Original doesn't mean good. At least the standard xiaxia setting is based on a highly popular and well known set of real historical mythology and society. It's the equivalent of LotR clones, somewhat generic but only because the original was really good.
Litrpg COULD have this, but it would need someone to write an actually good setting first that people wanted to copy. It's got it's vague arcade/mmo feeling, but the setting is always very uninteresting and there's no videogame equivalent of religion, philosophy, politics, etc... so nothing really has any meaning or intent behind it, stuff just happens for no reason, like in a videogame.
Fantasy has lord of the rings, xiaxia has journey to the west, litrpg has dragonquest. Not exactly a fair fight.

Like honestly take any litrpg and just put it into a xiaxia setting and it'd automatically work better and make more sense. Even DnD fanfiction functions better because of it's tight ties to lotr.

I'm saying they're shit BECAUSE they don't have a standard setting. Standard setting == there was at least one amazingly popular standout story that everyone afterwards is imitating. No standard setting == there's nothing but mediocrity and shit.
And most litrpg is blatantly copying videogames, specifically dragonquest. Western litrpg is a little different, more ttrpg than rpg, but still fairly heavy into videogames. Th issue is that a genre being based on "videogames" or "ttrpgs" is like saying the setting in your novel is based on "literature" or "geography". It's so broad and shallow it's meaningless. Might as well say the present moment is "based on history".

People read foreign WNs mostly looking for a change of pace. Depending on if you're reading western, japanese, chinese, or korean there's usually a different set of attitudes, themes, and tropes accompanying each. It helps if you're craving some novelty to the point of being willing to ignore quality to an extent, both because WNs tend to be amateurish and TLs tend to be shit.

RI is just different to the point that it can practically be considered a freak accident within chinese stuff, so background research on other xianxia WNs is both helpful and unhelpful to it.

>how good is wandering inn?
It's a very good attempt at an Epic Fantasy story sa a webnovel, with monumental ambition to tell stories of dozens of people in a ancient and large fantasy world.

The common misconception is that the author is female, which is just a sign of overdosing on 4chan, because male authors tend to do female protagonists these days. But the female characters in TWI are written well -- as in there are likable, which astounds anons who can't concieve that -- so people think the author is female too, even though it is blatantly obvious that the author's interests, mindset and writing style is as 'male american in his 30s' as it gets.

Not to mention his name is Noah James, as was leaked by a shop he was selling his comic at.

These are not women written wy women for women, these are women written by a man, which makes them compelling to men. A typical occurrence in fantasy genre.

The story might appear 'leftists' if you are utterly clueless /pol/tard, otherwise it's quite clear the author is a typical liberal with a touch of social conservatism.

Nope, new Litrpgs definitely don't have a lot of it in their literary genetic code, not at all.
