Some writers are on another level.
This remind me of Mouche from The Lost Steps. I hate her so much when I was a kid, then I got the book recently only to find out she doesn't speaks in the first 100 pages or so, it's just the protagonist shitting on her.

Could also read Sebald, Mann and Goethe on the original language. But I still fell like something would go missing anyway, no matter how well you spoke the given language, if your not born in the same cultural frame. Even withing Europe.

"Allnächtlich im Traume," is what got me hooked. I read the translation first and loved it, and upon reading the original, hearing its perfectly rhythmic construction, I was finally dispelled of the common belief that German is an ugly language. I saw, under Heine's pen, it become something of real beauty. Sidenote: I'm addicted to the Fritz Wunderlich edition of Schumann's rendition of the poem, even if the Mendelssohn edition might be a bit better.
