Suttree is the greatest novel ever written IMO, and definitely cormacs best (I’ve read every book he ever wrote twice+)

>> No.21228098

>>21227094
Ellroy is mostly a good writer.
There’s usually a certain amount of sexual perversion that seems excessive and unnecessary.
At least a couple of the novels tie up the plot with explanations crammed in towards the end that can seem contrived.
The writing quality is really good otherwise, and tends to pull one thru to the end.

Its pretty good but Corncob was still sounding like if someone pressed Faulkner through a sieve made of Moby Dick, though not as obvious as Keeper. It wasnt till Child that he started developing his own voice, which he had mastered by the time he finished Suttree

>> No.21228814

Page number difference and the first edition of suttree is a lot older than the road, it’s also long out of print.

There was probably 50,000 copies for the first edition of The Road and they sold out in a few weeks.

>Corncob was still sounding like if someone pressed Faulkner through a sieve made of Moby Dick, though not as obvious as Keeper
Eh, I disagree. The biggest outlier in McCarthy's prose canon is still The Orchard Keeper. I have read that book thrice now and it is by far the most different in style even to its immediate successor in Outer Dark. Conversely, the prose in Child of God is basically Outer Dark but sparer. Neither reads like Faulkner except in their gothic tone; and certainly not like Melville.
The presiding deities in Outer Dark are Sophocles, Dante, Kafka and a tinge of Isak Dinesen imo.

Yes. It’s my favorite of his lesser novels. The other poster is right about though, it’s before he really found his voice. The dialogue in Outer Dark is top notch too.

they're dressed like fucking clowns, one is wearing a bloodstained wedding dress and all of them are just wearing random shit they found. it would be be funny if they weren't savages riding them down to murder them. can't believe you made it that far in if you couldn't figure that out

These sell well so I’d expect at least one more in the series. Unfortunately that will probably be No Country. By merit Suttree or the Border Trilogy would be better.
